Game Notes: 2013 Season
5/23 Varsity vs Hingham: B-R lost to Hingham for the second time this season by a score of 6-2 ... both teams looked poor defensively (7 B-R errors - 4 for Hingham) but Hingham was able to take advantage of the B-R errors for 4 unearned runs (only 5 hits) .... pitchers Jack Connolly, Cody Medairos, and Josh Monson had a total of 15 Ks ... offensively, B-R had only 5 hits also with Tyler Glavin (RBI) providing 2 of them and Pat Nee drove in Brian McSherry (double) with an RBI single. 5/22 Varsity vs Marshfield:
B-R defeated Marshfield 6-3 behind Andrew Noviello's complete-game 4-hitter with 16 Ks ... Joey Freiday had 3 hits (RBI) while Dave Miller (RBI), Tyler Carey, and Cory Wasylow (RBI) each had 2 hits. Brian McSherry added an RBI double. B-R improves to 15-4 overall.
5/20 Varsity vs Brockton:
B-R defeated Brockton at Campanelli Stadium 6-0 behind Mike Bruemmel's one-hitter over 6 innings (10 Ks) .... Cody Medairos pitched a scoreless 7th (2 Ks) for his first appearance of the season ... Bruemmel's masterpiece improves his record to 4-1 on the season ... B-R scored 5 in the 5th to break open a scoreless tie .... Brian McSherry (3 walks) walked, Connor Sullivan (3 hits) singled, and after a great bunt single by Tyler Carey (2 hits) to load the bases, Tyler Glavin walked to force in a run and with 2 outs Joe Freiday hit a clutch 2-run single to centerfield to make it 3-0 ... after Freiday scored on a wild pitch McSherry walked again to force in the 5th run .... B-R got one more in the 6th when Dave Miller (2 hits, walk) singled in Bruemmel who had walked and stole second.
5/16 Varsity vs Falmouth:
B-R defeated Falmouth 9-1 to improve to 13-4 overall. Andrew Noviello pitched a complete-game 4-hitter (14 Ks) to improve to 3-1 on the season. Tyler Carey (RBI, 2 runs, 2 SB), Mike Bruemmel (run), Joe Freiday (run, RBI, 2 walks), Noviello (RBI, run), and Cory Wasylow (run, RBI) each had 2 hits to lead a 13-hit offense. Brian McSherry and Pat Nee each added RBI singles.
5/14 Varsity vs Dartmouth:
B-R defeated Dartmouth 2-1 in a great high school baseball game to clinch the Old Colony League title at 3-1 in the league. Jack Connolly pitched a complete-game (9 innings) 4-hitter (10 Ks) for his 5th win of the season to lead B-R. After trailing 1-0 B-R scored both runs in the 5th as Brian McSherry singled and moved to 2nd on the bad throw to first ... then after moving to 3rd on an infield out scored on Corey Dinunno's single to tie the game .... after a stolen base Dinunno scored what would be the winning run on Tyler Glavin's single. B-R is now 12-4 overall. JV: Brendan Trahan was on the mound for this action packed game. He went 5 innings giving up 3 scattered hits over 5 innings. He struggled a little in the 4th and 5th facing 7 batters but errors were to blame for a few of these. Brendan left the game with a 6-4 lead. Shaun Bushlow came in relief in the 6th but it was in the 7th the errors crept back in and allowed Dartmouth to score 4 runs to take an 8-7 lead. John Livolsi walked to start the bottom of the 7th only to steal second base. Paul Lafond attempted to bunt John over to third but pulled back due to a high and inside pitch. The throw from the catcher sailed over the third baseman’s head and John scored easily. Paul then proceeded to be walked, while Christian Cellini became the pitch runner . Joey Silva sent a shot to centerfield as Christian was off with contact he was headed to third when the Center fielder misplayed the ball and he scored easily the winning run. Final score was BR 9 – Dartmouth 8.
5/11 Varsity vs Dennis-Yarmouth, doubleheader: (Game 1)
B-R lost to Dennis-Yarmouth 3-0 in the opener ... Mike Bruemmel was the tough-luck loser as he gave up only 4 hits (7 Ks) over 6 innings and allowing only one earned run (2 total) ... Dave Miller and Adam Chase had the only hits for B-R ... Shaun Bushlow came on to get out of a jam in the 7th.
(Game 2)
B-R defeated Dennis-Yarmouth 14-6 in a totally different type game than the first. John Monson pitched 6 innings (9 hits, 5Ks) to get his 2nd win of the year and Pat Nee finished up the 7th. Offensively, Andrew Noviello hit TWO GRAND SLAMS (3rd, 7th innings) ... knocking in 8 of the 14 B-R runs. Joey Freiday also had a big game with 2 hits (RBI, 2 runs, 2 walks) while Dave Miller's RBI single in the 3rd snapped a 20-inning scoreless string for the Trojans and started a 9-run outburst.
JV:
Making up a previously rained out game the Trojans split a pair of games vs. DY, winning the first game 13-7 and losing the second game 7-4.
Game 1: Freshman Chris Newman was brought up to pitch game 1 of the Double Header. He gave up 4 runs in the 1st, but after settling down he gave up 1 in the 2nd. Chris became more confident and stronger as the game continued striking out the side in the 6th. Chris ended the game with 4 walks; 5 hits and struck out 7. BR scored the first two batters in the 1st inning and then it was in the second they finally got to the DY pitcher, batting through the order scoring 8 runs on 6 hits. Offensive player of the game were Cam Polson going 4 for 5, scoring twice and had 3 stolen bases. The defense was led by Kyle Horseman and John Livolsi anchoring the left side of the infield making a combined 6 defensive stops. Cam Polson came in for relief in the 7th giving up only 2 runs to end the game.
Game 2: Brendan Connolly started game 2 that was rain soaked. Connolly gave up 8 hits over 5 innings and walking 5. Joey Silva came in for relief in the 5th giving up 1 hit over 1 1/3 innings and striking out 2. The offense was led by John Livosli and Joey Silva each going 2 for 3 and Eddie Purcell going 2 for 2. Freshmen: The Freshmen baseball team had payback on their minds traveling to Dartmouth for this league contest. The Trojans scored early and often to hand the Indians a decisive 14-0 loss. Mike Manning was a machine on the mound only surrendering one hit, two walks, and striking out twelve for the victory. Manning also collected 3 hits, while Zach Nussbaum went 3 for 3 which also included a towering 3 run home run over the right-center field fence. Chris Newman (2hits) Cade McNaughton (2hits) Rob Duarte and John Pestana both with triples led the Trojan attack.
5/10 Freshmen: The Freshmen baseball team dropped their second game of the season to Hingham.
After an error plagued first inning, the defense would only surrender 1 run the rest of
the game. Tanner Brakken would pitch well in relief for the Trojans. The bats would be
silenced for the day only managing 1 run.

5/9 JV vs Barnstable: BR sent 29 batters to the plate and 12 walked away striking out vs. one of the best pitchers that they’ve seen all year. BR lost 3-0, Eddie Purcell did a good job on the mound striking out 4. Walks and some decent timely hitting pushed runs across in the 2nd, 4th and 5th.
5/7 Varsity vs Durfee:
defeated Durfee 9-4 to improve to 10-2 and qualify for a return to the State Tournament. Jack Connolly (4-1 record) got the win with 6 innings of pitching (6 hits, 9 Ks) ... while Tyler Carey (3 RBI, 2 runs, walk) led off the game for the 2nd time this season with a HR and added a 2-run triple in the 5th. Joe Freiday (2 RBI, run, walk) and Corey Dinunno (run) each had 2 hits also. Mike Bruemmel added an RBI triple and Dave Miller (2 walks) had an RBI single. JV: Freshmen: The Freshmen baseball team got back on track with a decisive victory over the Hilltoppers. Winning pitcher Nick Bruemell pitched 5 innings and struck out 7 for the victory. Ryan Koczela reached base 3 times with 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Andrew Thorsen also added 2 hits. Cade McNaughton, Nick Andrews and Chris Newman each scored twice for the Trojans.
5/3 Varsity vs Brockton:
beat Brockton at home 9-2 to improve to 9-2 on the season. Mike Bruemmel came on in relief of Josh Monson (4 inns/2 hits/2 runs) to get the win with 3 shutout innings (1 hit, 5 Ks). Joey Freiday (3 RBI, walk, 3 runs) led the way with 2 HRs (#'s 4 and 5) and a single while Adam Chase also homered (#2) in the 6th. Dave Miller (RBI, walk, SB, 2 runs) added 2 hits and Cory Wasylow added a 2-run single in the 6th. JV: The losing continued with stymied bats once again losing to Brockton 4-1. Having bases loaded twice during the game but unable to cross a runner killed the chances for the Trojans. Only five hits were recorded for the Trojans while giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. The Trojans will look to bounce back at Durfee this Tuesday May 7th, after its first consecutive losses this season.
5/2 Varsity vs Dartmouth:
defeated Dartmouth on the road 6-2 to improve to 2-0 in the OCL. Andrew Noviello pitched 7 innings of 4-hit baseball (10 Ks) to improve to 2-0 on the season. Cory Wasylow (8th) and Josh Monson (9th) each pitched scoreless innings in relief. Offensively, Mike Bruemmel (RBI, SB, run) and Corey Dinunno (run) had 2 hits each ... while Dave Miller, Noviello, and Joe Freiday each had RBI sacrifice flies. B-R improves to 8-2 overall. JV: The Trojans snapped their 3 game win streak with a loss to Dartmouth 5-2. Brendan Connolly took the hill and gave up 5 runs through six innings on 5 hits. Errors plagued the Trojans late in the game but more importantly the Dartmouth pitching kept the Trojans at bay with only 7 hits scattered through the game. Playing well were Austin Parker hitting a triple in the 4th and going 1 for 2; Eddie Purcell was 2 for 3 with 2 stolen bases; Cam Polson was 2 for 3 and 1 RBI. Freshmen: B-R suffered its first loss of the year to a good DHS team. Physical and mental errors on defense proved costly for the Trojans. The Trojans lowest offensive output of the season would hurt them
also as they left 8 base runners stranded in a lot of key situations.

4/30 Varsity vs Barnstable:
B-R defeated Barnstable in the OCL opener by a score of 8-0 .... Jack Connolly pitched 8 innings of 6-hit baseball (7 Ks) to improve to 3-1 on the season. Pat Nee and Connor Sullivan each made two excellent defensive plays in the first few innings to help Connolly keep Barnstable off the board. Offensively Tyler Carey (run, 2 RBI, walk), Connor Sullivan (2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 walks) and Corey Dinunno (SB, 2 runs) each had 2 hits to lead the way. Ross Talpey scored his 5th run of the season. B-R is now 7-2 overall. JV: B-R played a tremendous game winning 5-4 in 9 innings. BR followed the Jimmy Valvano motif of “Never Give up”. Losing 4-1 going into the fourth inning BR was able to take advantage of 2 walks and 3 hits scoring 2. It took to the bottom of the 7th to cross the tying run. The inning began with a Cam Polson drawing a walk and stealing 2 of his 4 stolen bases on the day to setup the tying run. Joey Silva’s single RBI tied the score 4-4. After giving up 2 runs in the 1st and 3rd Eddie Purcell was stellar giving up only 2 more hits on the day. With BR having the winning run on 3rd in the bottom of the 8th it took a Cam Polson walkoff single in the bottom of the 9th to score Brad Deflaminis who started the inning with a triple. Kyle Horseman started an outstanding double play to end a potential go ahead for Barnstable who had a runner in scoring position. Hitters of the day were Joey Silva 2/3, John Livolsi 2/4, and Brad Deflaminis 2/4. Freshmen: The freshman baseball team remained unbeaten (8-0) with a league win against rival Barnstable. Tanner Brakken was the winning pitcher for B-R. Mike Manning came in for relief and shut down a late Raiders rally. Rob Wood got the offense going by breaking up the no hitter, which resulted in two runs. Cade McNaughton came up with a big rbi single and Matt Reagan also scored twice for the Trojans.
4/27 Varsity vs Hingham:
lost it's second straight game ... at Hingham 14-11 in a re-scheduled make-up game. Cory Wasylow came on in relief in the 3rd inning and did a nice job keeping the game manageable ... allowing only 3 runs (2 earned) over 3 and 2/3 innings. Offensively Tyler carey (2 runs) had 3 hits while Dave Miller (2 runs, 4 RBI) added 2 hits. Joe Freiday (2 walks, 3 runs) had a 2-run double and Adam Chase temporarily tied the game at 6-6 with a 2-out, bases clearing, three-run double in the 3rd. Tyler Glavin walked twice, doubled and scored 3 runs. B-R is now 6-2 on the season. JV: Brendan Trahan went 5 strong innings giving up 3 hits on the day and 2 runs. Joey Silva got the save giving up only 1 hit. Joey also picked off two runners at second base stopping any threat Hingham offered to score. Joey Silva also helped the team at the plate going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Garett Yurkins went 2 for 2 scoring twice and had 2 RBI. A total team effort was essential in the win, with a total of 12 hits scattered among: Cam Polson, Kyle Horseman, Paul Lafond, Christian Cellini and Austin Parker, Pat Doherty, Eddie Purcell and Pat Whooley. B-R won 9-2 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
4/25 Varsity vs Marshfield:
lost to Marshfield 10-3 for their first loss of the season ... B-R fell behind early and could never get it going ... the offense only had 5 hits for the second straight game. All 3 runs scored in the 5th inning when Connor Sullivan and Tyler Carey led off with walks ... Tyler Glavin then singled in a run followed by a two-run double by Mikey Bruemmel but that was it for the scoring ... B-R falls to 6-1 on the season. Freshmen: The freshmen baseball team ran its record to 7-0 with a win on the road in Marshfield. Chris Newman pitched a no hitter into the 7th inning before surrendering his first hit of the game. He also gave up no earned runs as well as striking out 12. Nick Andrews hit a solo homerun and Matt Reagan had 2 hit and 2 runs scored for the Trojans.
4/18 Varsity vs Silver Lake:
beat an undefeated (5-0) Silver Lake team by a score of 5-0 in the championship game of the Brad Martin Tournament. Andrew Noviello pitched 6 innings (2 hits, 8 Ks) scoreless baseball to pick up his first win of the season and Josh Monson pitched a scoreless 7th to finish it. Offensively B-R had only 3 hits (Tyler Carey, Dave Miller, and Brian McSherry) but scored all 5 runs in the 1st inning ... the keys being Miller's RBI single and McSherry's 2-run double. Tyler Glavin also stole home on a double steal in the inning. B-R improves to 6-0.
4/17 Freshmen vs Cardinal Spellman:
Alex McGrath pitched a shortened game vs. Cardinal Spellman due to the mercy rule. Cardinal Spellman was not able to muster a hit off him till late in the 4th inning with a bloop single into right field. Mike Manning led all hitters with 3 and had 2 RBI and scored 3 times himself. Cade McNaughton reached base hit first 3 times with two walks and a single, scoring each time. BR scored 4 in the first, 5 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd and 4th and 4 in the 5th to closeout the game winning 15-0.
4/16 Varsity vs New Bedford:
defeated New Bedford for the second straight game in the opener of the Brad Martin Memorial Baseball Tournament hosted by Plymouth North HS ... Jack Connolly (2-0) was the complete-game winner (5 hits, 10 Ks) ... Mike Bruemmel (2 RBI, run, SB) led the way with 3 hits while Tyler Carey (HR, RBI, 2 runs) had 2 hits. Adam Chase hit a huge 3-run HR to left-field in the top of the 7th that proved to be the game-winner. B-R improves to 5-0.
4/10 Varsity vs New Bedford:
B-R defeated a very good New Bedford team 9-7 to run its record to 4-0 on the season. Mike Bruemmel earned his 2nd win of the season, pitching 5 and 2/3 innings with Jack Connolly (1 and 1/3 inns) getting the save with scoreless relief. The "play-of-the-game" was a run-saving two-out diving stab (6th inning) of a well-hit NB groundball by Brian McSherry to his left that was heading up the right-field line with a runner on 2nd that would've tied the game ... recovering to beat the runner to the bag. Offensively Joey Freiday continued his torrid pace with a 2-run HR rocket and an RBI single while also walking twice ... Tyler Glavin had 4 hits (3 runs scored) and Mikey Bruemmel had a big 2-run single (eventual winning RBI) in the 5th. Pat Nee led off the 6rth with a single and then scored an important insurance run on Andrew Noviello's (Sac Fly - 2 RBI) RBI single. JV: Eddie Purcell was on the hill trying for his second win of the season in as many attempts to fall short losing to New Bedford 3-2. He gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs, walked 4 and struck out 3 going the distance. The defense was a little less than it's usual allowing 2 errors and responsible for 1 run. The offense was below par with its Avg. of hits only producing 8 hits on 28 AB and 2 runs. The offense had its work cut out this day, having to play catch up from the beginning down 2-0 going into the bottom of the 1st. It wasn't until the 3rd with a Garrett Yurkins single, Brad Deflaminis single and then the Cam Polson 2RBI double that tied the game at 2. BR had runners at 2nd in the 5th and 6th but were unable to score them. Even though the bats didn't produce hits or runs there were some very loud outs, including the last 3. Christina Cellini was robbed in the 7th by a running left fielder who stretched out and caught a loud line drive. Pat Whooley also crushed a ball to deep LC only to have the center fielder to make another spectacular running grab. But it was Brad Deflaminis who produced the loudest out of the game with a crushing blast to deep, deep center field only to be robbed just at the fence line by an amazing grab again by the center fielder. Final score New Bedford 3 BR 2. Freshmen: The Freshman baseball team pushed their record to 4-0 with a win over the Whalers. The offense was the story again by scoring 11 runs on 17 hits. Nick Andrews and Zach Nussbaum collected 3 hits a piece for the Trojans. Chris Newman pitched 5 innings of shutout ball while giving up two hits and striking out 10.
4/5 Varsity vs Whitman/Hanson:
defeated Whitman-Hanson 17-1 to improve to 3-0 on the season ... Josh Monson pitched a complete-game 5-hitter (9 Ks) to win his first varsity start in a great effort. B-R's offense was led by Joey Freiday with 2 HRs, a double, and 6 RBI (4 runs scored) while Mikey Bruemmel also had 3 hits (RBI, run scored) ... Ryan Scripter (2 RBI), Cory Wasylow (2 RBI) and Tyler Glavin (RBI, run scored) and Connor Sullivan (RBI, run scored) each added 2 hits. JV: battled Whitman Hanson and won a bat battle 15-12 improving their record to 3-0. Brandon Trahan got the win going 4 2/3 giving up 10 runs on 10 hits and striking out 5. The defense was stellar with Cam Polson throwing a runner at home plate from center field. The offense was a total team effort battling out 14 hits, taking a stingy approach with 12 walks. Paul Lafond led all batters going 2 for 2 with 4 RBI and 1 extra base hit, while Joey Silva went 2 for 3 and 2 RBI. Freshmen: B-R made it 3 straight for the week with a victory over the Panthers. The Trojans got off to a slow start andtrailed most of the game. Trailing 4-1 going into the top of the 6th, the offense woke up by scoring 8 runs and never looked back. Mike Manning was the story of the game by pitching 4 innings of relief and striking out 9 batters, while only giving up one hit. Offense received 2 hits from Nick Andrews (2 runs) and Chris Newman.
4/4 Varsity vs Durfee:
B-R defeated Durfee in a very sloppily played game to improve to 2-0 on the season. B-R made several uncharacteristic mental errors and played uninspired baseball for stretches of the game but still made sure to take advantage of some poor Durfee pitching (11 walks including 4 batters hit by pitches) to win 10-3. Jack Connolly settled down after a shaky first inning (all 3 Durfee runs with 2 unearned) to pitch very well (14 Ks and only 1 hit after the 1st) over 6 innings for the victory. Andrew Noviello pitched a perfect 7th for the second straight game to finish. Offensively Joe Freiday (3 RBI) and Tyler Carey (2 BB, 3 SB) each had 2 hits to lead the way. Pat Nee, Adam Chase and Noviello all had RBI hits while Dave Miller (BB), Mike Bruemmel (FC) and Corey Dinunno (SF) each added RBI's. JV: Brandon Connelly had a great outing, allowing only 1 unearned run along with 7 K's in 4 innings. On offense, Polson and Horsman both reached all 4 AB's with 2 runs and an RBI each..Cellini had 5 RBI including a bases clearing triple in the 5th..livolsi went 3-4 with a run scored and 2RBI along with 2 solid innings on the hill..Lafond added 2 more hits with a run and an RBI to keep his average at 1.000 on the young season. We went up 3-0 after the first, and with the score 5-2 after 4 1/2 we put up 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th to blow the game open. Freshmen: The Freshmen made it 2-0 on the young season with another 5 inning shortened contest.
Tanner Brakken pitched 3 innings and gave up 1 run while striking out 7. John Pestana shutout the Hilltoppers for 2 innings and fanned 3. The offense once again scored early and often. Matt Reagan, Nick Andrews, Zach Nussbaum, John Pestana, and Ryan Koczela all had 2 hits apiece. Chris Newman scored 3 runs for the Trojans.

4/2 Varsity vs Falmouth
: B-R opened its season with an 11-2 win @ Falmouth ... Mikey Bruemmel pitched 6 strong innings (5 hits/6 Ks) for the win and Andrew Noviello finished up with a scoreless 7th ...
