Game Notes: 2008 Season MIAA South Sectional Tournament Semi-Final: B-R Baseball's very successful season came to an end with a Div. I South Semifinal loss to Walpole by a score of 9-2 ... B-R fell behind 4-0 after 3 innings with Walpole only hitting one ball out of the infield by making 3 critical errors ... the final blow was a two-out, bases-clearing double by Walpole in the 5th (all after there was no one on with 2 outs) to make it 7-0 ... Eddie Campbell was the tough-luck loser (his first high school loss after going 11-0 over his first 2 years) ... Bobby Hinckley and Tim Belanger pitched very well in relief over the final four innings ... B-R also had several key baserunning mistakes in the middle innings as they were trying to mount a comeback ... Offensively B-R had 8 hits with Paul Scleparis getting 2 of them ... Tyler Waterman and Eddie Eaton each had a long double and Eddie Campbell had an RBI single to score Neil Harrington ... Anthony Tempesta had a good game defensively at 3rd base for B-R ... Playing their final games for B-R were seniors Dan & Tim Belanger, Bobby Hinckley, Paul Scleparis, Nick Ives, Eddie Eaton, Sammy Murdoch, and Kevin Morrissey. B-R finishes the season at 17-6. MIAA South Sectional Tournament: B-R defeated league-rival Dartmouth in the Div. I South Quarterfinals by a score of 9-5 ... winning pitcher Greg Leger (2-1) went the distance with an impressive 10-strikeout effort that included scattering 12 hits and only walking one hitter ... Greg made big pitches to escape jams on several occasions, especially early in the game to give the B-R pitching staff a much-needed rest ... Offensively, Paul Scleparis and Eddie Campbell led the way with 3 hits, 1 Run, and an RBI each ... Drew Larson had 2 doubles, a run scored, and an RBI ... Tim Belanger had 2 hits, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored ... Bobby Hinckley also had 2 hits and 2 runs scored ... and Dan Belanger (RBI) and Tyler Irving had big hits ... B-R is now 17-5 overall and plays Walpole (#3 seed) tomorrow (Thursday) @ Braintree HS at 3:30pm in the Div. I South semi-finals MIAA South Sectional Tournament: The Trojans defeated Framingham 9-3 ... Eddie Campbell pitched 8 innings of 4-hit baseball while striking out 16 hitters and walking only 1 for his 5th win of the season (5-0) and lowered his ERA to 1.47 ... Greg Leger finished up in the ninth ... Offensively, B-R was led by Drew Larson with 3 hits, 2 RBI, 2 Runs scored ... Bobby Hinckley with 2 hits and 2 RBI .... Paul Scleparis with 2 hits and 1 RBI with a run scored ... Greg Leger with a key 2-run single and 3 RBI total ... Anthony Tempesta with an RBI infield hit. Varsity vs Whitman/Hanson: B-R defeated Whitman-Hanson 2-1 in 8 innings to finish the overall regular season at 15-5 and undefeated at home ... Tim Belanger (5-2 on the season) pitched an excellent complete game, allowing only 3 hits and no runs after the 1st inning ... Drew Larson made a spectacular catch near the fence in the 5th to save at least one run if not more ... Offensively, B-R could muster only 6 hits with Bobby Hinckley having 3 of them, including the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the 8th which scored Eddie Campbell who had walked and stolen 2nd ... Hinckley also scored the first B-R run in the 2nd after leading off the inning with another double ... B-R now awaits the MIAA seeding meeting on Tuesday the 27th to determine who, when and where they will begin the state Div. I South baseball tournament against ... Varsity vs Taunton: On 5-21-08 B-R defeated Taunton 12-0 to clinch the OCL title outright with a 7-1 league record ... Greg Leger pitched an outstanding game for his first varsity win, limiting Taunton to 5 hits while striking out 11 batters for the complete-game shutout ... Offensively, Drew Larson (3 runs scored, homerun, 2 RBI) and Bobby Hinckley (3 RBI, run scored) each had 3 hits ... Paul Scleparis had 2 hits and 2 runs scored with an RBI .. and Neil Harrington had 2 RBI. Freshman vs Taunton: B-R took care of business versus Taunton High School. It was like a carbon copy of the first game but in reverse order 4-3. Mike Devin fired a gem and Cody Nussbaum put out the fire for the save. Tyler Martin had a huge pinch hit in the 6th which helped the team win, while Joe "Russ Sr." Amrhein scored the winning run. Varsity vs Attleboro: B-R defeated Attleboro 4-1 at home Monday to improve their OCL record to 6-1 which clinches no worse than a share of the league title (Barnstable is 4-2 right now with 2 games to go) ... Eddie Campbell improved his record to 4-0 on the season with a complete-game two-hitter while striking out 12 hitters and walking only 2 ... B-R had only 6 hits but made the most out of them combined with 5 walks issued and 2 key Attleboro errors ... on the flip side B-R played errorless baseball with especially great defense from Neil Harrington at shortstop and Paul Scleparis at second base ... Tim (run scored) and Dan Belanger each had a hit and an RBI and reached base twice while Drew Larson had a hit, walked, scored a run and stole a base ... while Bobby Hinckley had a hit and a walk and also scored ... Varsity vs New Bedford: On 5-15-08 B-R lost to New Bedford 2-0 in a very frustrating game ... Tim Belanger pitched very well in the loss, only allowing 3 hits and walking 3 ... but 2 walks, an error on a bunt, a ground ball and several stolen bases allowed NB to score twice in the 5th without getting the ball out of the infield ... B-R on the other hand had 7 hits and had 6 batters walked and didn't score while stranding 11 runners on base as well as having a runner thrown out at the plate in the 6th. JV: B-R put forth a tremendous short-handed effort but New Bedford’s bats woke up just in time to pick up a 7-2 win. Billy Zolga pitched four impressive, scoreless innings to start the game but six New Bedford runs in the sixth overcame the Trojans. Kyle Reid had two of B-R’s four hits and scored the first run after singling and stealing two bases. Cam MacDonald scored the other B-R run on a Kyle Smith single. Varsity vs Barnstable: B-R defeated Barnstable at Barnstable 4-2 in another big OCL match-up ... Eddie Campbell won his 3rd game of the season (3-0), pitching 6 innings of 4-hit baseball while striking out 13 hitters ... Greg Leger finished up the 7th for his first save while striking out 2 ... Offensively, B-R only had 6 hits but made the most of them with Drew Larson getting 2 hits and scoring twice ... Paul Scleparis had a hit, stolen base, and 2 runs scored ... while Eddie Campbell and Bobby Hinckley each had RBI singles ... B-R improves to 5-1 OCL and 12-4 overall ... JV: B-R couldn’t get anything going on offense to help Mike Duran and Chris Oien, who combined to pitch a tremendous game in Barnstable. Coleman O’Brien scored the lone Trojan run on an RBI groundout by Evan Hill, but the Trojans could only muster four hits on the day. Donnie Doroni had a tough luck double that was blasted deep into the outfield in the second inning but rolled out of play as he was on his way to third base that could have changed the game. Duran had 9 strikeouts in the losing effort. Freshman vs Barnstable: Nick Morril went 4-4 with 5 RBI's in the win. Cam Robbins picked up the win for the Trojans. He was relieved by three more Trojan pitchers. Varsity vs Dartmouth: B-R Varsity Baseball defeated Dartmouth at home 11-2 in a key OCL game. Eddie Eaton was the complete-game winner, scattering 7 hits and striking out 9 to raise his record to 3-1 with a1.75 ERA ... Offensively Tyler Waterman had 3 hits including his 3rd homerun of the year to go with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored ... Dan Belanger also scored 3 runs with 2 RBI .... Drew Larson and Paul Scleparis each had 2 hits and 2 runs scored with a stolen base ... and Eddie Campbell had 2 doubles with an RBI ..... B-R goes to 4-1 in the OCL and 11-4 overall with the win. Freshman vs Dartmouth: Matt Ives did it all in the the game 3-3, two RBI's, three stolen bases and the best catch of the season in center field. It was a shoestring against the wind in the gap. Varsity vs Durfee: Varsity baseball team defeated Durfee 6-2 to improve to 10-4 overall (3-1 OCL) ... Tim Belanger pitched four innings of one-hit baseball to improve his record to 4-1 on the season ... Bobby Hinckley pitched the last 2 1/3 innings (no earned runs) to earn the save ... Offensively, Tyler Waterman hit his 2nd homerun of the season with one on in the 6th and walked to score 2 runs ... Tim Belanger helped himself out with a key 2-run single in the 3rd ... Dan Belanger and Bobby Hinckley each had a hit and scored 2 runs ...Eddie Eaton had a hit, walk, and an RBI ... Tyler Irving had a hit and a walk ... and defensively Drew Larson had a great diving catch in centerfield ... Dan Belanger threw a runner out at 2nd trying to steal to end a Durfee rally in the 3rd ... Varsity vs Taunton: The B-R varsity baseball team defeated Taunton at home 12-4 ... Ed Campbell pitched 6 innings of 7-hit baseball with 10 K's to get his 2nd win (2-0) of the season ... he also had 2 hits, 4 RBI, scored twice and walked ... Tim Belanger finished up by pitching the 7th ... Drew Larson had 2 hits (including a nice bunt single), 2 runs scored and an RBI ... Bobby Hinckley had 2 hits and 2 RBI ... Dan Belanger had 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and picked a key runner off of 2nd base in the 4th ... Eddie Eaton had 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI ... and Tim Belanger also had 2 hits, an RBI and scored a run. Freshman vs Taunton: First loss of the season. Mike Devin pitched an outstanding ball game. It was 3-3 with two outs in the 6th inning and the Trojan infield made an error. The score ended 4-3. The first 6 batters went 2-18 because of the great pitching of Taunton. They just made a few more plays. It was a great game by both teams. Varsity vs Attleboro: The Trojans defeated Attleboro 4-2 last week to move to 2-1 OCL and 8-4 Overall ... Eddie Eaton pitched a complete-game victory with 9 K's and no BB's while scattering 9 hits to move to 2-1 on the year ... Bobby Hinckley reached base all 4 times up with 3 singles and a walk ... Dan Belanger had 3 RBI ... Paul Scleparis had 2 hits and a run scored ... Drew Larson had a hit, a run scored, a walk and a stolen base ... and Eddie Eaton had 2 hits to help his own cause ... Varsity vs Brockton: B-R Varsity Baseball team defeated Brockton last Saturday @ Campanelli Stadium 14-4 ... B-R was trailing 2-0 in the 4th and 4-2 in the 5th before scoring 4 runs in the 6th and 8 runs in the 7th ... Bobby Hinckley came on in the 4th inning to finish the game and record his 2nd win of the season (2-1) with a nice relief effort ...... Offensively, Drew Larson and Eddie Eaton each had 3 hits and 2 RBI and several runs scored ... Tim and Dan Belanger each had 2 hits and 2 RBI ... Bobby Hinckley reached base 5 times with 4 walks and one single (2 RBI) ... Tyler Waterman had a walk, single and 2 RBI ... B-R is now 7-4 overall with a return to the OCL schedule this Thursday at Attleboro. JV: A four run seventh inning allowed the Trojans to walk of with a dramatic 9-8 win. Chris Oien’s single knocked in Kyle Reid with the winning run and Oien also pitched three dominant innings in relief (seven strikeouts) to pick up the win. Jon Palmer went three for four with three stolen bases and two runs scored as the offensive star of the game but the strong freshman tandem of Billy Zolga and Oien each contributed two hits as well for the winning team. Freshman vs Brockton: A beautiful day and an outstanding baseball game. It was a pitcher duel the first five innings and the score was three to two. Cam Robbins pitched a gem and had no decisions. Garret Kelly came in and gave B-R a chance to win. B-R was down 5-3 in the bottom of fifth. Playing fundamental baseball, key hits and good defense B-R took the lead. Kelly earned the win and B-R showed lot's of heart. Varsity vs Plymouth S.: B-R defeated Plymouth South yesterday in an exciting come-from-behind 5-4 win, scoring 3 times in the bottom of the 7th with Dan Belanger's bases loaded walk-off single the winning RBI. Tim Belanger had come on in relief of Greg Leger (5 2/3 innings and only 2 earned runs with 8 strikeouts) in the 6th to get the win and raise his record to 3-1 ... B-R turned 3 double plays on defense after a very shaky first inning in which PS scored all 4 of its runs .... Eddie Eaton had an excellent game defensively at shortstop ... Ed Campbell made an outstanding catch in left field also ... offensive stars for B-R were Eddie Eaton with 2 hits and an RBI (including a clutch double in the seventh to get B-R within a run ... Greg Leger with 2 hits/2 runs scored/ 1 BB ... Tyler Irving with the game-tying RBI in the 7th ... and Dan Belanger with his winning hit and reaching base 3 times while scoring a run. JV vs Cardinal Spellman: B-R scored all twelve of their runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, and Nick LeBlanc threw three hitless innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound. Jon Vallarelli, Russell Reed, Cam MacDonald, and Brendan Glavin all had multiple hit games in pacing the Trojan offense, with Glavin and Billy Zolga knocking in three runs apiece. Freshman vs Cardinal Spellman Varsity vs New Bedford (Plymouth N. Tournament): B-R lost to New Bedford this past Tuesday in the opening game of the Brad Martin Memorial Tournament played at Plymouth North HS by a score of 3-2 ... Eddie Eaton pitched very well in a complete-game defeat allowing only 1 earned run with the other 2 the result of some sloppy infield play as NB scored all 3 runs in the 4th inning ... B-R stranded 8 runners in the last 3 innings, leaving the bases loaded twicw ... offensively, B-R was led by Tyler Waterman with 2 hits/2 runs scored/1 HBP ... Ed Campbell had an RBI single and Anthony Tempesta had a single and was hit by a pitch.Freshman vs Brockton: Three pitcher's fired the apple today, Mike Devin, Cam Robbins, Adam McGrath. Numerous people hit the ball well. Nick Morril, Ryan McSwain, Joe "Rus Sr."Amrhein and great defense by Brenden Carallan. Brockton has a great team however the ball bounced Bridgewater-Raynham's direction. Varsity vs Plymouth S.: B-R defeated Plymouth South in a non-league game 15-4 ... game was called after 5 innings .... Bobby Hinckley went all 5 to register his first win of the season, striking out 8 while giving up 5 hits ... Offensive stars were Drew Larson with 4 hits/2 RBI ... Tim Belanger with 3 hits/2 RBI/3 runs scored ... Dan Belanger with 2 doubles/1 RBI/3 runs scored ... Greg Leger with 2 hits/2 BB's/3 RBI/2 runs scored. JV: Nick LeBlanc was a tough luck loser on the mound against a hard-hitting Plymouth South team. LeBlanc pitched six strong innings but B-R’s offense was stymied by Plymouth South’s pitcher, who held them to just five hits. Jon Palmer, Kyle Smith, Brendan Glavin, Zack Bissonette, and Cam MacDonald had the hits for the Trojans in this well-played game by both teams. Freshman: Going into the game both teams were undefeated. B-R took the lead early 7-1 after two innings. PS came back in the third and went up 9-7. In the fifth B-R broke it open batting around twice. Ryan Blake went 3-4 seven RBI's, Sean McCall had four hits, Garret Kelly came in pitched fantastic earning the win. Billy Buckley had two hits in the victory. Varsity vs Barnstable: B-R Varsity Baseball team defeated Barnstable yesterday 8-5 led by the complete-game, 5-hit pitching of senior righthander Tim Belanger (now 2-1). Belanger also struck out 10 and only gave up 2 earned runs. The B-R offense was led by Drew Larson once again with 4 hits, 2 runs scored, 2 SB's and an RBI ...Paul Scleparis (SB and 1 run scored) and Bobby Hinckley (reached base 4 times with 3 RBI) each had 2 hits ... Tyler Waterman hit his first varsity homerun with one on in the 2nd to give B-R its first lead at 2-1. Anthony Tempesta had a key RBI single in the 4th to score Dan Belanger (double, run scored) and start a 4-run inning. JV: Mike Duran pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits, striking out seven, and one unearned run. Jon Palmer led off the game with a double and scored on a Kyle Reid single for the first B-R run, while Kyle Smith had an RBI double to knock in Brendan Glavin in the bottom of the fifth. It was all the offense B-R would need to support Duran’s great pitching effort. Freshman: Adam McGrath pitched against Barnstable to earn the win. Ryam McSwain had three hit, Billy Buckley had two hits and three RBI's, Garret Kelly had many runs scored, Tyler Martin chipped in with two hits and caught a good game. Sean O'Donnell had a two run double, Joe Amrhein played a solid second base, Nick Morril scored three runs, Jeff Flannigan had two hits, and John Shea, Nick Burnett, Chris Lincoln played super defense in the 30-4 win over Barnstable. Varsity vs Dartmouth: The Trojans lost to Dartmouth yesterday in their OCL opener 4-3 ... Eddie Eaton piched very well for B-R, scattering 5 hits, walking only one, and giving up 2 earned runs. B-R got an RBI single by Anthony Tempesta in the 5th, scoring Dan Belanger who had doubled to cut the deficit to 2-1 ... after an unearned run by Dartmouth in the 6th pushed the lead to 3-1 B-R came up with 2 clutch runs in the top of the 7th to tie it ... Dan Belanger reached on an error, Tyler Irving had a pinch-hit single, and after a wild pitch and 2 strikeouts Paul Scleparis hit a 2-out, 2-run single to tie the game ... Dartmouth scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th on 2 hits. B-R is now 0-1 in the OCL and 3-3 overall. JV: Freshman Billy Zolga remained hot at the plate contributing a single, double, and a home run to lead the hitting attack against Dartmouth in a well-played 6-3 win. Jon Palmer added two hits and three RBIs as well as playing solidly in the outfield. Zack Bissonette returned to form pitching a very solid 6 innings allowing only one earned run, and Brendan Glavin earned his second consecutive save by closing the door in the seventh. Freshman: The freshman beat Darthmouth 6-5. Alex Cicchese lead the hitting attack along with Sean McCall. Garret Kelly, Kyle Cambell, Mike Devin pitched for the Trojans. Varsity vs Durfee: B-R defeated Durfee yesterday (at Durfee) in 8 innings ... 5-2 ... scoring 3 runs in the top of the 8th to break the tie ... Greg Leger pitched 6 solid innings, carrying a no-hitter into the 6th when Durfee scratched out 2 runs to tie the game ... B-R had taken a 2-0 lead with 2 runs in the 2nd on consecutive singles by Eddie Eaton, Greg Leger, and Drew Larson (4 hits, 2 RBI for the game) and Tyler Waterman forced in a run by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Tim Belanger pitched a perfect 7th to get the win, and Ed Campbell pitched the 8th for the save. B-R's 3-run 8th began with a lead-off double by Waterman, followed by a Bobby Hinckley (2 hits) single, an RBI fielder's choice grounder by Tim Belanger, and following a walk and error for another run ... Drew Larson's RBI single to left. B-R is now 3-2 for the season with the OCL opener coming up Monday at Dartmouth. JV: Nine different players scored for B-R in an impressive thirteen hit attack. Coleman O’Brien, Zack Bissonette and Billy Zolga had two hits and two RBIs apiece to lead the offense. Billy Zolga pitched the fifth and sixth to pick up the win while Brendan Glavin pitched a spotless seventh for the save. Freshman: Kyle Cambell pitch a fantastic 6 1/3 inning in a 5-4 win over Durfee. Ryan Blake had two more RBI's in the game. Alex Cicchese had two big doubles and had been a rock behind the dish. Cody Nausbaum pick up another save in the victory. Varsity vs Marshfield: B-R defeated Marshfield yesterday by a score of 12-2 ... Winning pitcher Eddie Eaton (1-0) held Marshfield to 2 runs, scattering 4 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings of excellent pitching ... Greg Leger finished the game with a perfect 7th inning of relief ... Drew Larson continued his torrid pace with 3 hits (1 RBI and 3 runs scored) ... Paul Scleparis also had 3 hits (1 RBI and 2 runs scored) ... Bobby Hinckley had 2 hits and 2 RBI and played well defensively at 1st base ... Tim Belanger had a key 2-out, 2-run single in the 2nd inning to start a rally ... Dan Belanger and Neil Harrington both had outstanding games defensively and each scored twice ... and Sammy Murdoch had a very nice running catch in left field in the 6th inning to save a run ... B-R is now 2-2 overall and has yet to play an OCL game ... next game tomorrow at Durfee. JV: Mike Duran pitched a complete game and knocked in all three runs as the JV Trojans were able to avenge an opening day loss to Marshfield. The middle infield of Billy Zolga and John Scleparis turned three nice double plays to help Mike Duran’s tremendous pitching effort. Freshman: Mike Devon got the start and pitched four innings and Cody Nausbaum pitched three strong innings and earned the win. Kyle Cambell had three hits and three stolen bases. Adam McGrath got on base four times and had four runs scored. Ryan Blake had a huge two run single in the 6th inning to seal the game. Matt Ives played supurb left field in the victory. Varsity vs Whitman/Hanson: B-R Baseball team lost to Whitman-Hanson on Monday by a score of 10-6 ... B-R had leads of 3-1 and 4-3 and couldn't hold on in the last 2 innings ... Bobby Hinckley (0-1) pitched well for 4 innings before tiring ... Drew Larson had 2 hits and 2 RBI ... Eddie Eaton had 2 hits ... and Dan Belanger had 2 hits and scored 3 runs .... Ed Campbell and Paul Scleparis each had 2 RBI in the losing cause. JV: At Whitman-Hanson, the J Vs had to deal with another brutally cold day and were outdueled 6-2. Jon Palmer and Ryan Drowne each had a hit and accounted for the two B-R runs. Chris Oien pitched well in relief. Freshman: Cam robbins earned the win and pitched 5 innings. Mike Devin, Cody Nausbaum each had two hits and Sean McCall, Matt Collins played outstanding defense. Klyle Cambell pitched the last two innings in the 15-5 win. Varsity vs Brockton: In their home opener B-R defeated Brockton 5-4 to even their record at 1-1 ... Eddie Campbell pitched a complete-game victory with eleven strikeouts while allowing only 2 hits. Drew Larson had two hits (including a solo homerun in the second inning) and scored two runs to lead B-R offensvively. Paul Scleparis also had two hits and scored a run ... Tim Belanger had two hits and an RBI, and Bobby Hinckley had a single and made some nice plays at first base. Varsity vs Marshfield: B-R lost its opener on the road as they fell behind 3-0 and 6-2 before closing to 6-5 on a two-run home run by Ed Campbell in the 4th inning .... but were able to score only one more run the rest of the way while defensive lapses allowed Marshfield to pull away. Offensively, Drew Larson had three hits and an RBI, Tim Belanger had two hits and an RBI, Bobby Hinckley reached base three times and scored twice as well as making some nice plays at first base, Nick Ives had an RBI single, and Paul Scleparis had two hits and an RBI. J.T. Tumiski and Greg Leger both pitched well in relief. JV: At Marshfield, the J V Trojans suffered a tough opening game loss, 10-9. Donnie Doroni started the game on the mound and pitched well despite a variety of fielding errors by the defense on a very cold day. Offensively, the JVs were in mid-season form knocking out 11 hits, including two from Kyle Reid and three from Billy Zolga. Nick LeBlanc also pitched very well in relief. |
