Game Notes: 2011 Season
6/2 Varsity vs Attleboro MIAA South Sectional Preliminary Round: B-R lost in a heartbreaker 1-0 to Attleboro in a state tournament preliminary round game to end its season ... Billy Zolga pitched an excellent game (6-hitter) for the Trojans - going all nine innings and allowing only a two-out unearned run in the top of the 9th on a wild pitch with a man on 3rd ... while walking only 1 and striking out 6 ... B-R had a runner thrown out at the plate in the 3rd and stranded 4 other runners in scoring position (including two at 3rd with less than 2 outs) while managing only 5 hits (one each by Zolga, Kyle Campbell, Cody Nussbaum, Sean McCall, and Matt Collins). Besides Zolga's pitching performance the other bright spot was a very good defensive effort that included some nice plays to keep the game scoreless into the 9th. B-R finishes 11-10 overall on the season.
5/29 Varsity vs Milton: B-R defeated Milton 3-2 in 12 innings in an excellent game to finish the regular season at 11-9. The game ended dramatically on a "walk-off" solo HR by Cody Nussbaum who had also knocked in another run in the 3rd with a two-out double. The other B-R run scored when Kyle Campbell singled, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scored when Milton misplayed the throw back in after a Matt Collins single ... Shane Holmes pitched 6 very good innings (allowing only 2 unearned runs) folowwed by scoreless innings from Garrett Kelly (7th), Pat Chalmers (8th and 9th), Connor Peterson (10th and 11th) and Mike Bruemmel (12th) who also picked up the win (3rd on season) ... Billy Zolga had 3 hits while Mike Bruemmel, Matt Ives, and Shane Holmes each had 2 hits in a 16-hit B-R attack. JV:

Billy Zolga pitched a complete-game 6-hitter (6 Ks) for his first win of the season and had 2 triples and a sacrifice fly for 3 RBI (scored 3 runs) to lead the way. Sean McCall (2 BBs, 2 RBI, 2 runs, SB), Brandon Hoyle (BB, SB, run), and Mike Bruemmel (2 RBI, SB, run) each also had 2 hits in the game. Matt Ives (BB, run) had 2 RBI and Kyle Campbell added an RBI single. Ryan MacSwain added a double and scored a run. B-R is now 10-9 overall. JV: Freshmen: A well played game and some timely hittting helped the baby Trojans win their 10 game of the season. Nick Holmes threw the ball great going the distance for the boys.
5/25 Varsity vs Taunton: B-R lost to Taunton 10-2 as an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd was lost due to continued mental and physical (4) errors ... B-R has lost 4 games in a row and also was swept by Taunton for the first time in 15 years ... B-R went out to an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning as Billy Zolga walked, stole second, and scored on a two-out RBI single by Mike Bruemmel who then scored on an RBI double by Matt Ives (2 hits) ... that would be it for the offense ... B-R falls to .500 (9-9) for the season. JV: Freshmen: Corey DiNunno pitched all seven on 86 pitches. Corey chucked strikes all day long and put the ball in play. No errors occurred today because the boys were on their toes due to numerous strikes. Nick Holmes had a web jem day. Sullet had a two run single.
5/23 Varsity vs Durfee: B-R lost to Durfee 7-5 after coming back to tie (4-4) things up in the 6th inning ... Connor Peterson pitched well enough to keep B-R in the game with a chance to win and again some poor fielding hurt at critical times ... offensively Mike Bruemmel (run, SB) had 3 hits ... Kyle Campbell (2 RBI) had 2 hits ... and Billy Zolga SF, 2 RBI) hit his 8th HR of the season ... Sean McCall (run, RBI), Matt Ives (run, SB), and Brandon Hoyle (run) each added a hit to a 10-hit attack. B-R is now 9-8 overall. JV: Freshmen: It was one of those lazy days after a eight day lay-off. Those boys needed to shake the rust and check the alarm clock. Four pitchers threw today. Every who was not injured played. We just had to jump back on the horse.
5/22 Varsity vs Barnstable: B-R lost to Barnstable 4-1 in a key OCL game in which the Trojans came out flat and rusty after an eight-day layoff .... Shane Holmes pitched very well (5 hits, 0 BBs, and only 1 earned run) in a losing effort while the B-R offense managed only 2 hits - a Billy Zolga solo HR (7th of season) to tie the game in the 4th and a Sean McCall single in the 1st. Defensively B-R made 5 errors and numerous other mental mistakes that took them out of the game. B-R is now 3-2 in the OCL (3rd place) and 9-7 overall.
5/14 Varsity vs Marshfield: B-R lost to Marshfield 5-2 (make-up game) Billy Zolga made his first start of the season and gave up 3 earned runs in 4 innings ... Pat Chalmers pitched well the last 2 innings in relief and added an RBI double ... Sean McCall had an RBI on an infield hit for B-R's only 2 runs ... B-R is now 9-6 overall on the season.
5/13 Varsity vs New Bedford: B-R defeated New Bedford 10-2 behind the complete-game pitching effort of Mike Bruemmel (2nd win of season) .... Brandon Hoyle (HR, 3 runs, 3 RBI), Sean McCall (run, RBI), Ryan MacSwain (2 RBI), and Cody Nussbaum (HR, RBI) each had 2 hits to lead an 11-hit attack ...JV: Freshmen:A very well played game and the boys lost it at the end. B-R got a 3-0 lead in the first. Tyler Carey threw the first three and Josh Monson threw the next three. It was B-R 3 and NB 2 in the bottom of the sixth. The pitching staff fell in love with the fastball and NB sat on golden squirrel. The score was 8-3 by the end of the inning. The boys battled back and showed grit. It was now 8-7 with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd. Sully hit a line drive to left and the NB played layed out a made a spectacular play to end the game.
5/11 Varsity vs Dartmouth: B-R defeated Dartmouth 8-7 in 8 innings (exactly as the first meeting went between the two teams) ... Connor Peterson pitched 6 good innings but Pat Chalmers picked up the win in relief .... Sean McCall led the way offensively with 4 hits (3 RBI, 2 SB) .... while Ryan MacSwain (2 RBI) and Brandon Hoyle (2 SB, game-winning RBI) had 2 hits each. Chris Smith had a key RBI pinch-hit single and Matt Ives scored what would be the winning run after leading off the 8th inning with a bunt single. B-R is now 3-1 in the OCL and 7-5 overall. JV: The Trojans got a nice win to end a difficult streak, 9-5, over Dartmouth. Cody Medairos pitched extremely well in his first start of the year, going five innings and striking out 7. Ryan Scripter led the offense in going 4 for 4 with three doubles, two runs scored, and four RBIs out of the lead-off spot. Dan Noviello also contributed two hits, while Austin DeAndrade pitched the final two innings in relief to pick up the save. Freshmen: Dartmouth has two outstanding pitches and they will be tough task to beat the next four years. In both games B-R was right there (1-1 in the fifth first game)4-3 in the sixth in the second game. The boys played hard. The separator is Mr. Righty and Mr. Lefty from Dartmouth. They were the story but with some seasoning (Cajon) we can change the outcome.
5/9 Varsity vs Brockton: B-R defeated Brockton for the second time this season 8-3 in a game played at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. Shane Holmes was the star of this game as he pitched a complete-game 6-hitter (only 1 walk) for his 2nd win of the season (1st start) ... all 3 Brockton runs were unearned as B-R made 6 errors defensively. Offensively Cody Nussbaum (4 RBI, run), Mike Bruemmel (2 BBs, RBI, run), Matt Ives (BB, run), and Ryan MacSwain (BB, 2 runs) each had 2 hits ... Sean McCall had a rare inside-the-park 2-run HR and Holmes just missed a HR (double) by a foot to rightfield. B-R is now 7-5 overall. JV: The junior varsity Trojans suffered their fifth consecutive heartbreaking loss, 5-4, at Brockton. B-R jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead through two innings, aided by a variety of walks and hits (Ryan Scripter, Dan Noviello, Brian McSherry, and Mike Clifford). However, they were unable to stretch the lead, stranding 9 runners in scoring position throughout the course of the game. Pat Nee once again pitched well enough to win going five strong innings and allowing only two runs. Despite cruising through the fourth and fifth, the coach decided to turn to the bullpen in the sixth and the Trojans were unable to hold down the win. Freshmen: It was one of those windy days at B-R and one needed a golf club to drive the pearl over the fense.Three pitchers split the game 2, 2, 3 innings. Brockton played a nice game and gave the Trojans all they could handle. The next few weeks will dictate how the season will go.The question is are the baby Trojans going to be mentally prepared for the grind of their first high school baseball season. This team has no superstars but many good baseball players that must play hard and together to be successful.
5/5 Varsity vs Marshfield: JV: Freshmen: Josh Monson was in control for five innings and Ryan Bushlow came in the fifth. The big hitters Kevin Newton not related to Sir Isaiac. Also Will Burke spanked a triple in this 9 - 0 win.
5/3 Varsity vs Taunton: B-R lost to Taunton 6-4 ... Kyle Campbell (RBI, Run) and Mike Bruemmel (Run, SB) each had 2 hits while Brandon Hoyle (RBI) reached base 3 times and Pat Chalmers had 2 walks ... Matt Collins had a hit and made several outstanding defensive plays at second base ... B-R is now 2-1 OCL and 6-5 overall. JV: The Trojans again struggled to hold on to a lead in the late innings, eventually falling to Taunton 9-7. Jason Correia pitched three great relief innings to give B-R the chance to win, but the Trojans couldn?t quite come up with the clutch hitting they needed. Pat Nee and Chris Cream each had two hits for B-R, while Brian McSherry added two of his own, including a solo home run. Freshmen: Tyler Carey looked sharp at a tack today. The first inning the defense was shoddy but after it was a total team effort. The baby Trojans finally started to play defense again defeating the Tigers 6 - 2
4/30 Varsity vs Dartmouth: B-R came from behind to defeat Dartmouth in an exciting OCL game by a score of 8-7 in 8 innings ... Sean McCall (3 hits, 3 RBI, SB) hit a walk-off double to the left-centerfield gap that scored Brandon Hoyle (single) who was running from first on the pitch to win the game in extra innings ... Billy Zolga (2 runs, 3 SB) hit a HUGE game-tying HR (6th of the season) in the 7th and Shane Holmes pitched 2 perfect innings (6 Ks) in relief for his first varsity win. Cody Nussbaum and Chris Smith (GR.12) added RBI doubles to the offense. B-R is now 2-0 OCL and 6-4 overall. JV:B-R seemed to be well on their way to a nice 5-3 win, but with two outs and two men on in the seventh inning, a pair of errors allowed Dartmouth to tie the game, and eventually win 6-5 in eight innings. Pat Nee pitched six strong innings, while Tyler Glavin, Mike Clifford, Brian McSherry, and Dan NoViello led the offense. Freshmen: The game does not resemble the score. The first five innings took 45 minutes and the score was 1-1. It was a great pitchers duel. Both teams played well and the flood gates opened. Nine walks by the pitching staff and four hits scored 10 runs. The defense was good and all played hard. It was just baseball and practice for the pitchers for the walk-a-thon of choice which of course was Dartmouth. They certainly cashed the check.
4/27 Varsity vs Barnstable: B-R won its OCL opener at Barnstable 10-6 behind a complete-game pitching performance by Connor Peterson (3-1) ... B-R scored 7 first-inning runs and never looked back ... Billy Zolga (2 RBI, 2 runs, 3SB) led the offense with 3 hits while Brandon Hoyle (run, 2 RBI) and Matt Ives (run, 3 RBI) had 2 hits each. Ryan MacSwain (RBI double) and Peterson (RBI single) each also had key hits. B-R is now 1-0 OCL and 5-4 overall. JV: Joe Sargent was absolutely masterful on the mound for the Trojans, going nine strong innings, allowing just four hits while striking out 13. However, the Barnstable staff was equally stingy and was able to hold the Trojans off the scoreboard for a full ten innings before finally scratching across a run of their own. Dan Noviello contributed two of B-R?s five hits on the day, with Eric DeMoura, Pat McKinnon, and Pat Nee also getting hits. Freshmen: Hope this day taught the boys a lesson of being mentally prepared to play a game or endeavor in their life. Barnstable flat out wanted it more, played harder, mentally executed, and beat the Trojans in every aspect of the game. This was a game that the Trojans should have won. The youngsters inexperience showed this whole day. I will give props to the second unit bringing the game close and showing the B-R pride that always exists and will exists. This pride is in all three programs lead by Head Coach Coach K.
4/26 Varsity vs Durfee: B-R lost to Durfee 11-4 ... falling behind 5-0 after 2 innings and never recovering ... Sean McCall (BB, RBI) had 2 hits while Brandon Hoyle, Chris Smith (Gr.12), Matt Ives, and Cody Nussbaum had the other 4 hits for B-R. Shane Holmes came on to pitch two excellent scoreless innings in relief. B-R falls to 4-4 overall for the season. JV:In a rather sloppy game in which the J.V. Trojans committed nine defensive errors, a good offensive comeback was just not enough to overcome Durfee. Mike Clifford led the B-R offense with three hits, while Dan Noviello and Tyler Glavin picked up two hits apiece. Ryan Scripter also contributed a two run home run. Freshmen: It was a very productive day for the Trojans. Josh Monson pitched 6 innings and picked up another w and Patrick Whooley pitched the seventh. Jason Bernier played well at 1B and swung the lumber. Austin Bickford made two diamond gem plays.Ryan Irvine won the rock, paper, scissors battle and chipped in with two hits and a great play in right field. Jeff Thibault was solid in the field and is starting to come along as a hitter.

Brian McSherry, Cam Keane, Peter Drowne, and Mike Clifford all had two hits for the Trojans in the nice win.
4/15 Varsity vs Brockton: B-R defeated Brockton 6-5 in an exciting come-from-behind effort. Miguel Vasquez got the first B-R hit of the game in the fifth innings and Pat Nee had a clutch, two-out, two RBI double to give B-R the lead. Brain McSherry knocked in Mike Clifford (who also had a hit) for the game-winning run in the sixth. Freshmen: The baby Trojans hit the ball with authority today spanking 19 hits. Numerous people crushed the almond today but Joe DeGrace had a quality day at the yard. His improvement is outstanding. Tler Carey, Josh Monson, Shaun Bushlow and Patrick Wholley spun it for the Trojans.
4/9 Varsity vs Dennis-Yarmouth: B-R was handily beaten by Dennis-Yarmouth 11-1 in a make-up game ... going ahead 5-0 in the 1st inning and never looking back. B-R managed only 4 hits by Ryan MacSwain (BB also), Cody Nussbaum (double), Matt Ives, and Joe Amrhein. B-R falls to 2-1 on the season. JV: The J.V. bats finally came alive by the end of their second game, but were not able to erase six errors and four unearned runs en route to a 7-6 defeat at the hands of a scrappy D-Y squad. Pat Nee picked up the tough-luck loss throwing the first four innings, while Brian McSherry (2 hits, 2 runs scored) pitched three very solid innings of relief. Chris Cream also laced two hits for the B-R offense, and Miguel Vasquez ripped an RBI triple in the seventh inning to get the game to its final score.
4/8 Varsity vs Marshfield:B-R defeated Marshfield 12-2 to improve to 2-0 on the season ... Sophomore Mike Bruemmel pitched 5 effective innings to record his first varsity win with Garrett Kelly picking up his 2nd save of the season with 2 more scoreless innings of relief ... Offensively B-R was led by Brandon Hoyle (3 doubles, BB, 4 RBI, 2 runs), Billy Zolga (2 hits including a long 2-run HR to right, 3 RBI, 3 runs), and Matt Collins (3 hits, RBI). JV: On a cold, blustery opening day, the junior varsity Trojans fell by a score of 7-1, to Marshfield. Joe Sargent took the loss on the mound for B-R, but pitched himself out of some jams in the early innings. Jason Correia pitched two great innings in relief. Unfortunately, B-R was held to just two hits, coming from Peter Drowne and Cam Keane, respectively. Freshmen: Josh Monson spun five inning 73 pitch semi-gloss gem. Joe Friday had two big hits and drove in three RBI's.
