Game Notes: 2009 Season
6/4 MIAA South Sectional Semifinal Game vs Catholic Memorial:
B-R was defeated by Catholic Memorial in the Div. I South semi-finals by a score of 6-4. B-R fell behind 2-0 in the first and came back to tie the game in their half of the inning ... Drew Larson walked, followed by a Mike Connolly single with both runners moving up on an outfield error ... an infield grounder by Eddie Campbell scored the first run and a double by Tyler Waterman tied the game. After falling behind again 6-2 B-R got a run in the 4th on a double by Tyler irving and an RBI infield hit by Anthony Tempesta to cut it to 6-3. Brendan Glavin got B-R out of a jam in the 4th and Eddie Campbell came on to pitch the 5th, holding CM scoreless the rest of the way. Campbell would allow only one hit and strike out 9 in his 5 innings of outstanding relief ... B-R got another run in the 5th on a lead-off homerun by Connolly to make it 6-4 but despite getting 7 men on in the next 5 innings could not come up with the big hit to score again. Connolly had 2 hits (RBI, 2 runs), and Jon Palmer had 2 hits and reached base 3 times with a walk also ... B-R finishes a great season at 20-3 with its 2nd consecutive South Final Four appearance
6/1 MIAA South Sectional Quarterfinal Game vs Brookline:
B-R defeated Brookline 4-1 in a Div. I South quarterfinal game to advance to the South Div. I Semifinals ... B-R will play Catholic Memorial @ Braintree HS tomorrow (6-3-09) at 4:00pm ... B-R was led by the outstanding pitching effort of Mike Connolly (8 and 2/3 innings, 7 hits, 14 K's) whose curveball kept the Brookline hitters off-balance all afternoon ... After falling behind 1-0 on a 2nd inning home run B-R took the lead for good with 2 runs in the 3rd ... Tyler Irving (2 hits, run scored) singled to open the inning and one out later Anthony Tempesta (2 hits, 2 runs scored) also singled ... Drew Larson (2 hits, RBI) then drove in Irving with a single to right and Tempesta scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Connolly. In the 4th B-R got a run after two were out when James Alfonso got the first of his two walks and scored all the way from first on a hard line drive to left by Tyler Irving that the leftfielder misplayed to make it 3-1 ... In the 5th B-R got its final run when Tempesta singled, Larson was hit by a pitch, Connolly hit into a fielder's choice with Tempesta taking 3rd base, and scoring on Eddie Campbell's sacrifice fly. Greg Leger came on with the bases loaded and two out in the 9th and got the Brookline clean-up hitter to pop out to Irving to end the game for his 6th save of the season ... Connolly improves to 6-2 for the year and B-R improves to 20-2 ... also, B-R finished at 23-1 over the past two seasons at HOME !
5/30 MIAA South Sectional First Round Game vs New Bedford:
B-R defeated New Bedford 5-1 in a very well-played game ... Story of the game was Eddie Campbell (now 8-0 for the season) pitching and Tyler Waterman hitting ... Campbell pitched a complete-game (9 innings) 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts, walked only 2, and was in control the entire game ... Waterman had 4 hits (including 2 triples) for 3 RBI to lead a 12-hit attack by the B-R offense ... Tyler Dennis had two hits and an RBI ... Jon Palmer (1 hit) had a sacrifice fly for the 5th RBI ... Drew Larson had a hit, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases ... James Alfonso (double), Tyler Irving, Anthony Tempesta, and Campbell (run scored) had the other hits ... Tyler Irving, Mike Connolly, and Anthony Tempesta all played well in the infield defensively ... B-R improves to 19-2 overall.
5/24 Varsity vs Durfee:
B-R defeated Durfee 2-0 in the regular season finale to finish the regular season at 18-2 which was good for the 1st seed in the upcoming MIAA Division I baseball Tournament. Mike Connolly pitched 6 innings of 4-hit (8 strikeouts) baseball to earn his 4th win of the year ... Greg Leger pitched a scoreless 7th for his 5th save. B-R scored both of its runs in the 6th inning. Connolly led off with a "hustle" double and was moved over to 3rd on a groundout by Eddie Campbell ... Durfee then intentionally walked Tyler Waterman and James Alfonso worked a conventional walk to load the bases ... Neil Harrington then pushed a perfectly placed bunt to the right side for an infield hit and RBI to drive in the eventual winning run ... and Greg Leger followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Waterman with the 2nd run.JV: Freshmen: Shaun Lynch pitched another gem and over powered Durfee H.S. This pitcher has great potential helping the varsity one day, with hard work. Eric Walbrek adjusted his swing and went yard hitting the ball about 370 feet and his blocking behind the dish is outstanding. Chris Cream has played the hot corner slick. Nick Schlatz has been steady and consistent at short and batting 3rd in the line-up. Ben Laing has picked up his game and has done a nice job. Matt Livingston has improved dramatically and plays first base. He also has wheels.B Hoyle know as "Squirrel" swings the lumber. All athletes have improved this season, it's been a good year.
5/21 Varsity vs Taunton:
B-R defeated Taunton 8-3 to finish the OCL schedule with a 6-2 record ... good for 2nd place in the league behind Dartmouth which finished a game ahead at 7-1 ... Eddie Campbell pitched a complete-game 5-hitter for his 7th (7-0) win of the season ... Mike Connolly had a 3-run homerun in the 3rd (scoring Drew Larson and Anthony Tempesta ahead of him) to put B-R in front at the time 3-2 ... after Taunton tied it at 3-3 Connolly (5 RBI)hit a huge two-out 2-run single in the 6th to give B-R a 5-3 lead ... that was followed by Eddie Campbell's two-run triple with Campbell scoring on the overthrow of 3rd base ... Defensively B-R played errorless baseball for the 4th time this season ... B-R's overall record improves to 17-2 so far for the year with one game to go in the regular season. JV: Freshmen: A well played game by both teams. The Trojans made three mental base running plays and took them out of scoring situations. It's the little things that win games against good teams.
5/20 Varsity vs Whitman/Hanson:
B-R defeated host-team Whitman-Hanson by a score of 10-5 in non-league action. Brendan Glavin earned his first varsity win (to go with 1 save) with 4 innings of 2-hit baseball in relief of starter Mike Duran. The B-R offense was led by Tyler Waterman who was 3 for 3 with a walk and SIX RBI (25 for the season so far). Eddie Campbell (2 stolen bases) reached base all 5 times up with 3 walks, a single and a fielder's choice while scoring 4 runs ... Mike Connolly had 2 doubles (RBI, stolen base) and a walk while scoring 3 runs ... Drew Larson (stolen base) had a hit, walk, and run scored ... James Alfonso and Tyler Dennis each had RBI singles and Kyle Smith had a hit and a walk. B-R improves to 16-2 with the win. JV: In the Trojans' best game of the year, Cam Robbins pitched six tremendous innings and the B-R offense was firing on all cylinders belting out 20 hits and 18 runs. Fourteen different players had hits for the Trojans, who were led by three hits each from Billy Zolga and Sean McCall. However, Ryan MacSwain and Tyler Martin stayed hot, each going two for two. Kyle Campbell scored three runs, Ryan Drowne had three RBIs, and John Shea contributed a single and an RBI. Freshmen: The Trojans knocked off the 16-0 Panthers yesterday. Pat Chalmers threw 114 pitches and Victor Santiago came in relief the last inning and 2/3. It was a well contested game same as the first, but in both games were broken open in the sixth. Numerous Trojans had two hits or more.
5/19 Varsity vs Attleboro:
B-R defeated Attleboro (in a game that locked up no worse than 2nd place in the OCL) 3-0 behind the outstanding complete-game, 3-hit pitching effort of Greg Leger. Leger is now 3-0 with 4 saves on the season. Offensively, B-R got 2 hits (which included an inside-the-park homerun) from Drew Larson, 2 hits and 2 RBI from Tyler Waterman, and a triple and 2 runs scored from Eddie Campbell. B-R is now 5-2 in the OCL and 15-2 overall. JV: In a curfew-shortened 4 inning affair, B-R gave a sluggish effort and for all intents and purposes deserved to lose. Garrett Kelly, Ryan Blake, and Chris Smith all got a little pitching action in the no decision, but mostly everyone seemed a little out of sorts due to the frustrating field restrictions in Attleboro. However, Kyle Campbell managed to have an outstanding say at the plate, going three for three with two runs scored to pace the Trojans' offense. Freshmen: Shaun Lynch pitched a great game for the Trojans. He threw 5 2/3 innings for the win. Lynchie gave up 2 earned runs. Matt Livingston scored the first run of the game. Chris Smith went three for four and Victor Santiago played outstanding shortstop. Sam Barbetto played a solid third base and swung the bat well. Joe Downing got same hacks in today. Kevin Curley started center and is known as K-Square Jr. Kevin Kelly started right field and is know as K-square Sr. Eric Walbrek has been a block behind the plate all season hitting from the sixth hole. Jason Corriea our team manager got an ab and turned on the AC.
5/14 Varsity vs Barnstable:
B-R defeated Barnstable 7-3 behind the combined pitching of Eddie Campbell (6th win, 11 strikeouts) and Greg Leger (4th save) ... Offensively, the Trojans were led by Drew Larson (2 runs, SB), Mike Connolly (run, RBI, 2 SB), and Tyler Waterman (run, 2 RBI) who each had 3 hits ... Eddie Campbell with 2 hits (2 runs, 2 SB, 2 RBI) ... and James Alfonso (RBI) and Tyler Dennis (walk) with 1 hit each. B-R is now 4-2 in the OCL (2nd place) and 14-2 overall as the team continues to try and improve on their tournament seeding. JV: A five run fourth inning did the Trojans in down in Barnstable as the offense sputtered on a bizarre, windy day. Despite two-hit games from Sean McCall, Billy Zolga, Nick LeBlanc, and Ryan Drowne, B-R just couldn't get anything going all at once. Cody Nussbaum pitched very well in relief of Nick LeBlanc, who just ran into one of those innings in which everything finds a hole. Freshmen: A great game going 11 innings. Starting pitcher was Victor Santiago(5 2/3). Shaun Lynch came in and shut the door in the sixth with a strikeout. B-R was winning 4-0 in the sixth. In the 7th a lead off two base error allowed the person to second base. Barnstable pushed him across to tie the game. The Trojans had many chances but could not push the winning run across. The game called to darkness.
5/12 Varsity vs Brockton:
B-R defeated Brockton 9-3 ... coming back from a 2-0 deficit to improve their record to 13-2 overall. Mike Connolly pitched the complete-game victory to improve to 3-2 on the season ... scattering 7 hits while striking out 7 and not walking anyone. Connolly also had 3 hits (2 runs, walk,1 RBI) while reaching base all 4 times up. Tyler Waterman had 2 hits and 3 RBI ... Tyler Irving (run) and James Alfonso (run, RBI) both also had 2 hits ... Drew Larson reached base three times from the leadoff spot with 2 walks, a single, and 2 runs scored ... Tyler Dennis has another 2-run double ... Eddie Campbell had 2 walks, a sacrifice fly, and 2 RBI ... Anthony Tempesta had a double with a walk and 2 runs scored. JV: In their fourth consecutive one run victory, the J.V. Trojans were able to knock off a solid Brockton squad 6-5, behind a four-run fifth inning rally. Chris Oien gutted out a tough performance on the mound finishing with 7 strike-outs, before Billy Zolga came in for the save. Offensively, Sean McCall paced the Trojans with three hits, with Ryan Drowne chipping in two hits and Ryan MacSwain getting the game-winning RBI double.
5/9 Varsity vs Plymouth South:
B-R defeated Plymouth South 11-2 behind the complete-game, 6-hit,10-strikeout effort of senior Donnie Doroni ... B-R's offense was led by Tyler Waterman (2 runs, walk) and Jon Palmer (run, 2 RBI) with 2 hits each ... Neil Harrington had 3 RBI on a single and hit-by-pitch ... Tyler Dennis had a big 2-run single (2 runs, walk) and Billy Zolga had his first varsity hit, a 2-run single. B-R improves to 12-2 with the non-league win. JV: B-R was able to push across three runs in the bottom of the sixth and then hold off a furious Plymouth South rally to hang onto a 6-5 win in a well-played ballgame. Chris Oien had a solid two hit game and Tyler Martin knocked in the game-winning run. Starter Nick Leblanc pitched very well, and Kyle Campbell came in to pick up the win in relief, striking out the final two batter of the game in dramatic fashion. Freshmen: Nick Schlatz pitched 5 2/3 innings. Five of the nine runs were unearned. Victor Santiago played an outstanding at shortstop and had two hits. Zach Lyons had a few hits and is striving at becoming a better all around ball player.
5/9 Varsity vs Dartmouth: B-R lost to Dartmouth 12-4 in a key OCL game that was a lot more exciting and close than the final score ... B-R fought back to take a 4-3 lead in the 7th but ultimately walks (12 total for the game) did in the Trojans as Dartmouth scored 9 runs in the inning. Eddie Campbell struck out 9 hitters and only allowed 2 hits in 6 innings. Tyler Waterman led the B-R offense with 2 hits, an RBI and 2 runs scored ... Drew Larson also had 2 hits and threw a runner out at the plate (great block and tag by James Alfonso) ... while Alfonso also had a key RBI double and Tyler Dennis drove in the lead run in the 6th with a double that scored Waterman to give B-R a hard-earned 4-3 lead at the time. B-R now trails Dartmouth (5-0) by 2 games in the OCL race at 3-2 and 11-2 overall. JV: B-R came out of the gates hot scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and then held on to win 4-3 over Dartmouth. Garret Kelly allowed two runs in relief to pick up the win after Brendan Glavin tossed three solid innings in the start. Sean McCall, Billy Zolga, and Cody Nussbaum each roped doubles in the first to give B-R the lead, with Chris Oien and John Scleparis scoring the final two runs of the inning. Freshmen: Pat Chalmers threw five strong innings for the win. Zach Lyons, which each outing is getting better, spun the last two. Zach had three hits and had a great day at the yard. Kevin Curley hit a two run double, Livingston played a good first base and Dylan Mederios played like a sparkplug at second.
5/4 Varsity vs New Bedford:
B-R defeated New Bedford 4-3 in a non-league game. Greg Leger pitched a complete-game 7-hitter while striking out 8 and walking 2 for his 2nd win of the season to go along with 3 saves. Mike Connolly was the offensive star for B-R with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Eddie Campbell walked and scored from first with two outs on Tyler Waterman's single with what would prove to be the winning run. Drew Larson (double), Tyler Irving (single), and Tyler Dennis (double) had the other three hits for a total of only 6 for the game. B-R turned two double plays defensively ... the first a nice stab of a groundball headed for center field by Tyler Irving who flipped to Mike Connolly for the turn ... the other an unusual 8-6-5 double play on a short line drive to Larson in centerfield who threw to Connolly for the force at 2nd base ... with Connolly then firing a strike to Anthony Tempesta at 3rd base for the tag to get B-R out of what had been a 3-run inning for New Bedford. B-R improves to 11-1 overall with the victory. JV: B-R won a dramatic comeback thriller against New Bedford, 10-9, that featured four lead changes. Chris Oien started the game hot for B-R on the mound but when a solid New Bedford squad started to get to him, Cam Robbins saved the day, holding the Whalers to four runs in the final four innings. Ryan Drowne had a walk-off single to knock in Blilly Zolga (two hits) in the bottom of the eighth to finish the win off. Sean McCall also had two huge hits for the Trojans on the day, but Matt Ives was probably the biggest contributor, going 3-3, including the base hit to send the game into extra innings. Freshmen: 7 - 0 was the result of a forfeit.
4/30 Varsity vs Durfee:
B-R defeated Durfee in a non-league contest by a score of 7-2 to improve to 10-1 overall and also qualify for the state tournament for the 9th consecutive year. Eddie Campbell led the way by striking out 12 hitters and scattering 5 hits to improve to 5-0 for the season. Campbell also hit a 3-run homerun (3rd of the year) and an RBI double for 4 RBI in the game to help his own cause. Drew Larson (run, 2 stolen bases), Mike Connolly (2 runs, 2 stolen bases), and Tyler Dennis (run) also all had 2 hits in the game. Other key hits were a Tyler Waterman RBI single and a Greg Leger RBI double and run scored. Mike Duran finished up in the 7th inning for B-R on the mound and James Alfonso had a good defensive game catching as well as contributing a hit. JV: Nick LeBlanc had a dominant game at the plate and on the mound to pace a 7-3 win for the J.V. Trojans. LeBlanc had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning before allowing the three runs in the sixth (all unearned), but also hit a bomb in the third inning to give B-R the early lead that they were later able to hold onto. Matt Ives also went deep for the Trojans (2nd of the year), while Ryan Drowne, Sean McCall, and Cody Nussbaum also chipped in extra-base hits off a tricky Durfee hurler. Freshmen: Victor Santiago and Zach Lyons combined to earn the victory for the Trojans. B-R beat Durfee 24-5. The whole team had a great offensive day. Kevin Kelly had an RBI single and Big Slammin Sammy Barbetto went 3-6 on the day.
4/28 Varsity vs Taunton:
In an OCL match-up B-R defeated Taunton 10-4 as Mike Connolly pitched a complete game for his 2nd win of the season. Offensively Neil Harrington had 3 hits (1 run), Drew Larson had 2 hits (2 walks, 2 runs) and 5 RBI ... Also with 2 hits were James Alfonso (run), Jon Palmer (3 runs, RBI), Eddie Campbell (RBI), and Tyler Waterman (walk, run). Defensively B-R only had 1 error and the 7th inning was highlighted by a sensational catch in right field by Jon Palmer to rob the lead hitter in the inning for Taunton of extra bases. B-R is now 3-1 in the OCL which is right behind Dartmouth (4-0 OCL) ... and improves to 9-1 overall. JV: In the sloppiest effort of the year so far, the J. V.'s lost a tough one to Taunton, 10-5. Through a mix of errors and solid hitting, Taunton scratched out three runs off starter Ryan Blake in the third inning and four off of reliever Garrett Kelly in the fourth to put the Trojans away. B-R chipped away at the lead by scoring in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but could never get a big inning going. Tyler Martin had a great game at the plate, going two for two with an RBI and a run scored. Freshmen: Shaun Lynch started the game and threw the rock well. He pitched four strong innings and Pat Chalmers got the save for B-R. Smiity hit a two-run missile over the right field fence an opposite way blast. That was all the Trojans needed to seal the deal. It was a hard fought battle by both teams.
B-R defeated Marshfield by a score of 16-2 in a non-league match-up ... Greg Leger pirched 5 innings of 2-hit baseball for the win (striking out 6) and Brendan Glavin pitched the final 2 innings for the save (also striking out 6). The 17-hit offense was led by Jon Palmer with 3 hits (2 RBI, 2 runs) ... Drew Larson (2 runs, walk, RBI), Eddie Campbell (2 walks, 2 runs, 2 RBI), James Alfonso (2 runs, walk), and Will Rolls (2 runs) each had 2 hits ... Tyler Dennis had a 2-run double and a sacrifice fly for 3 RBI as well as scoring 2 runs. B-R improves to 8-1 with the win. JV: Chris Oien tossed six innings of one-hit ball to shut down a Marshfield offense that put up 15 runs against B-R two weeks ago. He struck out eight batters and only walked two in the strong effort before Kyle Campbell came in to close the game in the seventh. The Trojans got all the offense they would need on RBI singles by Matt Ives and Cody Nussbaum (2 for 2 in the game) in the first inning, and a grand slam from Billy Zolga in the third. John Vallarelli also had a very strong game in center field and at the plate. Freshmen: Conner Peterson pitched a strong game but had no offensive help. The Trojans lost 3-1 and had many base runners but could not capitalize in the given situations. Marshfield's 3 runs were all unearned 1st, 4th, 5th.This is a game that was winnable but fundamentals were not executed.
4/25 Varsity vs Attleboro:
In a return to OCL action B-R defeated Attleboro 8-3 to improve to 2-1 in the league and 7-1 overall. Mike Duran pitched 5 innings(only 3 hits) for his 2nd win of the season (2-0) and Greg Leger finished up the last two for his 3rd save of the season. Offensively Eddie Campbell (2nd) and Tyler Waterman (2nd) hit back-to-back homeruns in the 2nd inning to key a 9-hit attack. Drew Larson (1 RBI, 2 runs) and Campbell (HR, 2 doubles, 3 RBI) both went 3 for 3 to lead the offense. Mike Connolly had 2 runs scored and an RBI ... Tyler Waterman added a sacrifice fly to his HR for 2 RBI ... Jon Palmer had a triple and run scored ... Greg Leger had an RBI ... and Tyler Dennis reached twice on walks and made a nice catch of a pop fly foul ball with two men on for Attleboro. JV: Cam Robbins (4 innings, 6 strikeouts), Mike Devin (2 innings, 4 Ks, W), and Nick Leblanc (1 inning) combined to stop the Attleboro J-Vs on a beautiful April day. The Attleboro pitching staff was a bit erratic but the Trojans were able to capitalize on some early game power to put the game away. After New Bedford tied the game with 2 runs in the third B-R won it with a 3-run seventh inning. Greg Leger singled to start the inning ... after a sacrifice bunt by Anthony Tempesta ... Drew Larson was intentionally walked ... with two outs Eddie Campbell had the clutch hit of the game, singling in Leger to re-gain the lead for B-R. 4/16 Varsity vs Barnstable:
B-R defeated Barnstable 6-1 in an important early-season OCL game as Barnstable had come in undefeated ... Eddie Campbell was outstanding on the mound for B-R as he allowed only the one unearned run, struck out 11, and gave up 3 hits to improve to 3-0 on the season. Offensively B-R scored 4 runs in the first inning to take charge immediately. Drew Larson (2hits, 2SB), Jon Palmer (2 hits, RBI), and Anthony Tempesta (2 hits, walk, 2 RBI) led the way on offense. Both James Alfonso (RBI single) and Tyler Irving (2-run single) had key hits in the 4-run first inning. B-R improves to 1-1 OCL and 3-1 overall. JV: A patient Trojan squad drew thirteen walks and got several timely hits to post an 11-4 win over league rival Barnstable on Thursday. Chris Oien (4 innings) and Mike Devin (3 innings relief, W) were very impressive on the hill, with each hurler striking out six Red Raiders. B-R had a total of ten hits and they were spread out among ten different players. As for extra-base hits, Tyler Martin and Ryan Drowne each blasted RBI doubles, but the hit of the young season so far was a sixth inning laser off the bat of Cody Nussbaum that sailed over the deep Legion Field fence and put a nice exclamation point on the game. Freshmen: Nick Schlatz threw 94 pitches and five innings for the win. The defense today made too many errors and forced the pitching staff to the brink. Connor Peterson earned the save. Connor is 5 for his last 5 swinging the bat. Eric DeMoura had a huge two run double and the Hoyle man laid down a big sacrifice bunt which aided the Trojans to push one more across.
4/14 Varsity vs Dartmouth:
B-R lost to Dartmouth in the OCL opener for both teams by a score of 6-5 ...
Dartmouth won the game with a run in the bottom of the 7th inning after B-R had scored 3 runs in the 5th to tie the score at 5-5. Mike Connolly pitched well in relief of Greg Leger, going 4 innings and giving up just the one run in the 7th. Eddie Campbell had 2 hits and 2 RBI ... James Alfonso had a key 2-run single in the 5th to tie the game ... Jon Palmer made the defensive play of the game by throwing out a Dartmouth runner from right field who was trying to advance to third base after a single. Some very poor baserunning errors also killed several B-R rallies. B-R is now 0-1 in the OCL and 2-1 overall. JV: Billy Zolga went three for four and knocked in four runs to pace the B-R offense, while Garrett Kelly (5 innings, W) and Cody Nussbaum (2 innings) combined to pitch a masterful three hit shutout for the 8-0 league win. The B-R defense was tremendous as well, making no errors and throwing in several web gems, particularly a diving catch by Kyle Campbell in the second inning. Mike Duran finished up pitching a scoreless 7th, striking out the side sandwiched around a single ... Anthony Tempesta has a big 3-run double that keyed the 6-run 6th inning for B-R and broke the game open. JV: The breaks just didn't go the Trojans' way against Brockton, with Billy Zolga picking up the tough-luck loss on the mound. Ryan Drowne got B-R off to a good start in the first, knocking in Zolga, and then a two RBI single by Sean McCall in the third plated Matt Ives and Mike Devin to tie the score at three. But, after a flukey ruling on a shot up the middle by Matt Collins called the go ahead run back to third, the Trojans were just not able to get the momentum back on their side. Kyle Campbell also pitched well in relief. Freshmen:The Trojans beat Brockton 13-6. Pat Chalmers got the win for the Trojans. Eric Walbrek had a big two run double and great sacrifice bunt. Victor Santiago pitched three innings in relief and had two hits. The boys played a little better but have a long way to go. Day by day!
4/1 Varsity vs Whitman/Hanson:
It was a typical opening day for New England High School Baseball, cold and a bit raw but three of the Trojans seemed to be in mid-season form as B-R defeated Whitman/Hanson 1 - 0 before a good crownd of bundled up fans. Starting pitcher Ed Campbell went five innings and struck out 14 of the 16 batters he faced. Coach Kearney then went to senior Greg Leger for two innings of outstanding relief work. Senior Drew Larson provided the only run necessary by stroking a curveball over the fence in center field in his first at bat. The only infielders to get any work was 3rd baseman Will Rolls (1 put out in the 6th) and Tyler Irving who had three ground balls to him in the 7th inning. JV: Starting pitcher Garrett Kelly (4 innings) and reliever Nick LeBlanc (3 innings, W) combined to stall a solid Whitman-Hanson hitting attack enough for the J. V. Trojans to pull out a 13-7 win on opening day. The Trojans' fourteen hits were spread out among eleven different players, with Kyle Campbell, Ryan Drowne, and Sean McCall picking up two hits each. B-R came out of the gates quickly but when W-H tied the score at 5-5 in the fourth inning, it took some clutch hitting from B-R to pull on top. In particular, Russell Reed, Chris Smith, and Ryan MacSwain had big two out, 2 RBI hits in the late innings to close off a good overall team win for the Trojans. Freshmen:The Trojans lost 8-2. It was 3-2 going into the fifth and defensive mistakes aided for a huge inning. Brad Delulis had two hits. Whitman-Hanson had a outstanding game and great team.
