Game Notes: 2011 Season
5/25 Varsity vs Coyle Cassidy: The B-R lacrosse field was the place to be Wednesday night for the Seniors final in-season and final home game of their 4 year high school lacrosse careers. The sun was out, a cool breeze blew across the lacrosse field, family and friends filled the stands, and the BR girls lacrosse team proved that there was no where else in the world that they would rather be at that moment in the 19-5 victory over Coyle Cassidy. The BR laxters had textbook transition, displayed true team defense, and spread the scoring out among ten players. Jess Ferrigno scored 4 goals, Shannen Heath and Sam MacMillan scored 3 goals each, and Liv Coakley and Krysta Williams scored 2 goals each. Individual goals were scored by Lauren Burgess, Kelly Gormley, Maddy Reilly, Nicole Alphonso, and Abby Hatfield. Julia Coakley made 5 saves in net.
5/24 Varsity vs Fasirhaven: In a much less colorful (cards that is) game B-R showed the visiting Fairhaven Blue Devils why they earned the Maritime league title in the Maritime League matchup with a 10-2 win. A true team effort went into the victory with strong defensive play by Jill Yung, Liv Coakley, Shae O'Connell, Marissa Dollloff, Marissa Romano, Kylee McGloughlin, Lauren Burgess, Shannen heath, Jill McElroy. Leading the goal scoring were Jess Ferrigno ( 4 goals) and Krysta Williams ( 2 goals.) Liv Coakley, Jill Yung, Shannen Heath, and Nicole Alphonso notched 1 goal apiece.Ali Ladue and Maddy Reilly had two assists. Julia Coakley had a quiet day in net but made 7 great saves.
5/23 Varsity vs Bishop Stang: The Lady Trojans came back from a 5 goal deficit but it wasn't quite enough to steal the win from the visiting Bishop Stang. After starting out with a 3-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the game Stang came out fighting and took advantage of the Trojans errors. Typical of the season the Trojans did not go down without out a fight and gave the confident Stang team something to worry about. Goal scorers for BR were Jessica Ferrigno (5 goals) , Sam MacMillan (3 goals 1 assist), Liv Coakley (3), and Shannen Heath (1.) Madison Reilly had one assist. Julia Coakley made 8 saves in net.
JV:The girls hosted their final lacrosse game of the season at home against Bishop Stang, who they played only a few days prior. Great efforts were put forth in this game by all, knowing that this was it. Lauren Burgess, a starting D-wing lead the team in draw controls, winning six. Netting two goals apiece were Nicole Kemmit, and Steph Hardy. Kasey Fries netted three of her own goals. Kayla Lynch had 9 saves this game but Stang put 12 past her. This was a great season for all of the girls, and they have improved so much throughout this season. Good job ladies!
5/21 Varsity vs Bishop Stang:The outcome of the B-R- Bishop Stang game doesn't accuratley show what an intense match it truly was. The Trojans didnt give up despite being down by three goals at the half and missing 4 of their teammates. They regrouped and came out fighting. 8 goals were scored in the second half but one got called back due to an offsides call. Goalscorers for the game were Jess Ferringo (4 goals), Sam MacMillan (2 goals), Liv Coakley (2 goals 2 assists), Jill Yung (1 goal), and Kendall McDonough (1 goal). Shae O'Connell, Kelly Gormley, and Maddy Reilly had one assist each. Julia Coakley made 12 great saves and had a key interception. Stong play by Marissa Dolloff, Kelsey Donahue, Laura Brandos, Abby Hatfield, Kylee McDonough, and Jessie DiCarlo. JV: The B-R Girls JV team had their first encounter with the girls from Bishop Stang, on a surprisingly hot and sunny day. Bishop Stang had a strong lead of 8-1 at the half, but the girls from BR never gave up. Fighting through a game with only a couple subsititues, the Lady Trojans fought back to only a 4 goal difference, when the game ended with a score of 12-8 in favor of Bishop Stang. Goals were scored by Nicole Kemmit, Kasey Fries, Brandi Pace, Kendall McDonough, Shae O'Connel (2), and Brianna Borgetti (2). Kasey Fries again led the team in draw controls, with 5, and defender Lauren Boyle lead the team with ground balls, with 4.
5/18 Varsity vs Bourne: The Lady Trojans won the Maritime league title for the first time in the history of the program with an 11-9 win over a competitive Bourne team. Everyone on the team contributed to the win with their hard work and determination. Jess Ferrigno lead the scoring with 5 goals, Sam MacMillan came through with 3 goals, and Jill Yung and Krysta Williams both scored one goal. Liv Coakley had 1 goal and 1 assist. Julia Coakley had 11 big saves. Ali Ladue, Maddy Reilly, Nicole Alphonso, and Kelly Gormely played well on attack.
5/16 Varsity vs Plymouth North: The Bridgewater-Raynham Girls lacrosse team fought hard against a strong Plymouth North team on a rainy and cold spring day. The Trojans came back from a half time deficit but came up short in the 14-13 loss. Goal scorers were Jess Ferrigno ( 3 goals 2 assists), Sam MacMillan (3 goals 1 assist), Liv Coakley (3 goals), Nicole Alphonso (2 goals), Shannen Heath (2 goals), and Kelly Gormley (1 goal and 1 assist) Good defensive effort by Jill McElroy, Abby Hatfield, Shannen Heath, Jill Yung, and Olivia Coakley. Julia Coakley had 10 saves in net. JV: The B-R Girls JV team had their second game of the season against Plymouth North. The girls are not new to playing in the rain and cold, which is what they faced during this game. The girls had another great improvement game, but still came up short with a score of 9-7, and a two goal difference in a lacrosse game, is not something to be looked down upon. Goals were scored by Abby Murphy, Brianna Borgetti (2), and Kasey Fries (4). Kasey Fries and Courtney Sheehan lead the team in draw controls, Fries with 5, Sheehan with 4. Defender Steph Chicoine lead the team in ground balls, with 6. Great games were played by defenders Alissa Young and Lauren Boyle, Marissa Dolof, and Marissa Ramano. The defenders had a total of 15 ground balls. The midfielders Lauren Burgess, Ali Day, Courtney Sheehan, Kasey Fries, Haley Murray, and Nicole Kemmit, hustled through the entire game. The midfielders lead the team with a total of 7 draw controls. The attackers Brianna Borgetti, Abby Murphy, and Kelly Aliberti worked together to get the team their seven goals.
5/13 JV vs Sandwich: The Lady Trojans hosted Sanwich for their second meeting of the season. BR suffered a close loss, with a final score of 10-8. After a slow start, the girls played a great game, working together and playing hard. Steph Hardy lead the team with 4 goals, 2 draw controls, and 6 ground balls. Kelly Aliberti, Brianna Borgetti, Shea O'Connel, and Kendall McDonough all helped Hardy out by scoring a goal a piece. Marissa Dolof chipped in with two draw controls, which ended up leading to BR goals. Kelsey Donahue was next in line with 4 ground balls, and a handfull of shots. Great efforts were put in by all of the players, and they worked well together, despite the score.
5/12 Varsity vs Ursuline Academy:The Lady Trojans came up short against Ursuline Academy on Thursday. Senior Captain Jess Ferrigno lead the goal scoring with two goals in the non league loss. Jill Yung and Sam MacMillan netted one goal and one assist each, Liv Coakley and Kelly Gormley each scored one goal apiece. A disapointing loss all around but the Lady Trojans will brush off the loss, pull together and play their hearts out on Monday against a competitive Plymouth North team.
5/11 Varsity vs New Bedford: B-R played smart as they ran out the clock out in the last two minutes of the game and came out on top in an extremely intense maritime league match up against New Bedford on Wednesday. The Trojans worked as a team and never let down mentally or physically. Julia Coakley had 18 saves in net and made the Whalers earn every goal they got. Other defensive standouts were Shae O'Connell,Kylee McGloughlin, Olivia Coakley, Jill Yung, Jill McElroy, Shannen Heath, and Abby Hatfield. Jess Ferrigno lead the charge on attack with 4 goals and 1 assist. Individual goal scorers were Jill Yung, Liv Coakley, Sam MacMillan, Kendall McDonough, and Kelly Gormley. Although the score was similar it was a much different game than the first match up of the season. The key to our success is playing together, playing tough, and having fun. JV: The Lady Trojans pulled out their second win of the season Wednesday against New Bedford with a score of 7-5. The BR girls won a total of 30 ground balls and six draw controls. Goals were scored by: Steph Hardy (2), Kasey Fries (2), Alissa Young (1), Brianna Borgetti (1), and Kayla Vicente (1). Netminder Kayla Lynch had a great game with 10 saves. 5/9 Varsity vs Fairhaven: The B-R Lady Trojans qualified for the MIAA Tournament for the first time in program history with a 12-5 victory against the extremely verbal and physical Blue Devils in Fairhaven on Monday. Freshmen Kayla Lynch played fiercely in net and made 13 saves in the first Varsity game of her career. The defensive unit of Jill McElroy, Jill Yung, Shannen Heath, Abby Hatfield, Liv Coakley, Marissa Dolloff, Marissa Romano, Kylee McLaughlin, and Shae O’Conner played tough and held the aggressive Blue Devils at bay. Phenomenal transition and attack was played by Kelly Gormley, Kendall McDonough, Ali Ladue, Jess Ferrigno, Maddy Reilly, Sam MacMillan, Nicole Alphonso, Kelsey Donahue, and Jessie DiCarlo. Sammy MacMillan and Jess Ferrigno lead the scoring with 3 goals a piece, Jill Yung netted two goals and 3 assists, Maddy Reilly scored 1 goal and had 3 assists, Kendall McDonough had 1 goal, Nicole Alphonso scored 1 goal, and Kelsey Donahue scored her first Varsity goal of the year in the victory. JV:
5/7 JV vs Sandwich: On Saturday, the Lady Trojans traveled down to Sandwich for these two teams first matchup of the season. This game, despite a tough loss of 13-11, was evenly matched; by speed, skill, and will to win. Kayla Lynch, freshman netminder, had her best game to date, with a record high of 17 saves! She was vocal in between the pipes, helping out her fellow defenders. Lauren Boyle and Alyssa Young lead the defense, each having 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers. Swing player Kendall McDonough had a great game leading the team with 5 goals, and 4 ground balls. Kasey Fries lead the team in draw controls where she won 4, and ground balls, wich she won 5. Nicole Kemmit (2), Brianna Borgetti, Steph Hardy, and Marissa Ramano also added to the teams 11 goal game. These two teams will meet again this coming week.
5/4 Varsity vs Dartmouth: Kelly Gormley, Sam MacMillan (1 assist), and Nicole Alphonso lead the scoring for Bridgewater-Raynham with three goals a piece in the torrential downpour on Wednesday. Dartmouth came out on top but the Trojans will hold their heads high and keep working hard as the road to the MIAA tournament gets closer and closer. Other goal scorers were Liv Coakley with 2 goals, and individual goals by Shannen Heath, Jess Ferrigno (1 assist), and Kendall McDonough (1 assist). Sophomore Abby Hatfield played extremely well on defense and almost scored a goal. Julia Coakley played hard in net and came up with ten saves in net. The loss was tough to swallow but will only help the Lady Trojans work harder and refocus. JV: The Lady Trojans perservered through the pouring rain yesterday against opponents from Dartmouth. They girls had a tough loss of 13-3, which was an imporvement from the teams last meeting. One goal was scored from Kasey Fries, while Brandi Pace netted two of her own. Kayla Lynch set aside 8 great saves, but the girls from Dartmouth found their way around her with nicely placed shots. Defense is still improving with starters Alyssa Young, Steph Chicoine, and Lauren Boyle. Lauren Burgess and Ali Day were stong defensive wings. Steph Hardy, Kasey Fries, and Haley Murray all played stong at center. Nicole Kemmit, Brandi Pace, Abby Murphy, and Kelly Aliberti all worked hard on attack.
5/2 Varsity vs Barnstable: The Trojans learned first hand on Monday what happens when you are at the top of the league; everyone wants to knock you off!! In a closely matched Maritime league game against Barnstable the Bridgewater-Raynham lacrosse team also witnessed first hand what happened first hand when one person takes it upon themselves to win the game for their team. The Red Raiders had a 6-5 lead at the half and the Trojans were scrambling to pull themselves back together and play as a team. BR managed to only allow 2 goals in the second half and capitalized on the Barnstable player who got her second card of the game and was out for the remainder of the game. Seniors Sammy MacMillan and Nicole Alphonso were a dynamic duo as they combined for 5 goals and 4 assists. Senior Jess Ferrigno came up big with 2 phenomenal one v one goals and Senior Liv Coakley stepped up and sunk 3 goals in the net herself while playing defense. The seniors wanted to win the game so badly and took it upon themselves to motivate the team and make it happen. Senior Maddy Reilly had one assist and handled the ball well on attack. Senior Shannen Heath continued her stealth like ways on the draw control and consistently stopped Barnstable in their tracks when they tried to get past her. Kelly Gormely played well in any of the three positions she was asked to play and made a big impact in the transition game. Senior Julia Coakley once again played like a brick wall making 18 saves in net. Senior Jill Yung gave all she had to get the team to focus and was key in the transition from defense to offense; and her checks were (almost) textbook!!! :-) Jill McElroy, Kendall McDonough, Krysta Williams, Kendall Smith, Nicole Urbano, Ali Ladue, Jessie DiCarlo, and Laura Brandos played well and hustled from the first whistle of the game until the last whistle. Once again, an exciting team victory. JV: The Lady Trojans, still improving throughout their season, tie a team record of most goals scored in a game, with a high of 7. A great effort was put in by each player, and they all played hard and pushed themselves through the whole game because they only had one substitute. Nicole Kemmit, and Steph Hardy each netted two goals apiece, and Courtney Sheehan, Kayla Vicente, and Kasey Fries added one goal apiece. Steph Hardy had five draw controls and seven ground ball pick ups. Defender Alyssa Young had 8 ground ball pick ups. Steph Chicoine had her first assist of the season to Nicole Kemmit (for her second goal). Kayla Lynch had 12 saves, a personal best for the new goalie. This team put forth a great game, but came up short with a 9-7 loss, which is a huge improvement since these two teams lasts met, just a week ago.
4/29 Varsity vs Nantucket: On a warm and sunny Friday on the island anything could have happened in the Maritime league matchup but the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans focused in on what they had to do, played as a team, and earned their second Nantucket victory of the season. Julia Coakley played well in net and made 18 saves. Nantucket fought hard until the very last whistle but it wasn’t enough. Sam MacMillan lead the team in goal scoring with 3 goals, Kendall McDonough had two goals(1 assist), and Shannen Heath had two goals. Individual goal scorers were Jill McElroy, Ali Ladue, Jill Yung (2 assists), Nicole Alphonso, and Jessie DiCarlo. The win was once again a team effort with all Varsity and swing players working hard and contributing to the victory. JV: The Girls JV lacrosse team had their first game back from vacation down in Nantucket, who they previously tied 4-4. This time around, the Girls JV had a tough loss 8-4. There were small problems adjusting to working together again on the field after such a long break without full team practices or games, but there was no shortage on effort. Goals were scored for BR by Brianna Borgetti (1), Kasey Fries (1), and Nicole Kemmit (2). Freshman goalie, Kayla Lynch had 13 saves throughout this game. Alyssa Young, Lauren Boyle, and Marissa Ramano were the stand out defenders during the game. Each one of them having at least 5 ground balls and at least 1 caused turnover.
4/27 Varsity vs Bourne: The B-R Girls lacrosse team is setting records this season as well as setting a precedence for the future. We play as a team and we win as a team. With some game time confusion the Trojans only had time for a quick warmup. A quick warmup was all Julia Coakley and her brickwall defense apparently needed as they earned their first shut out in the first half of play. Turning away 13 saves in the first half Julia kept BR in the game as the offense worked out a few areas of their transition game. Jill McElroy, Jill Yung, Olivia Coakley, Shae O'Connell, Abby Hatfield, and Kylee McGloughlin played as a unit and kept the frustrated Canalwomen at bay. Shannen Heath was stellar at D.Wing and was in stealth mode when it came to winning the draw. Jess Ferrigno and Sam MacMillan lead the BR offense with their tenacity and hustle. Jess scored 4 goals, Sam had two goals, and Kendall McDonough, Liv Coakley, and Maddy Reilly scored one goal apiece in the hard fought victory.
4/25 Varsity vs Barnstable: In her pre game pep talk Coach Sullivan asked her players to focus on draw control and boy did they ever! With their highest draw control percentage of the season the B-R Lady Laxters battled the visiting Red Raiders from barnstable to the very end. Julia Coakley was calm, cool and confident in net and made 15 saves in net to backbone the Trojan defense. Liv Coakley, Jill McElrou, Abby Hatfield, Kylee McGloughlin, Jill Yung, Shea O'Connell, and Shannen Heath worked as a unit and only get better and more in tune with each other as the season progresses. Captain Sammy MacMillan managed to block out the chanting and the hip checking from Barnstable and lead the team fearlessly up the field to set up the offense time and time again and netted one goal. Freshmen Kendall McDonough celebrated her birthday early with her first hat trick of her Varsity career. Maddy Reilly, Nicole Alphonso, Laura Brandos, Ali Ladue, Krysta Williams, Kendall Smith, and Abby Raymond played hard on offense. Jill Yung, Shannen Heath, and Captain Liv Coakley were not only rock solid on defense but also came up big with one goal a piece. Captain Jess Ferrigno continuede her scoring frenzy and put two past the goalie before she even had a chance to react. The key to the early success of this season is truly that this team plays as a team and wins as a team. Everyone has stepped up at different times during the season and came through for the team when it truly counted. Barnstable will definitely be ready for revenge when they host the Trojans in a week but until then Bourne(Wednesday 4/27 ) and Nantucket (Friday 4/29) will do all they can to knock the Trojans out of their first place position in the Maritime league. JV: The Girls JV Lax team hosted Barnstable High School on 4/25/11 at home. A great game was put forth by all on their first day back from vacation. The Lady Trojans had a tough loss of 13-4, but that does not show the hard work that they put in throughout the game. Goals were scored by Kasey Fries, Ali Dias, Haley Murray, and Nicole Kemmit. Strong defensive efforts were put in by Steph Chicoine, Marissa Ramano, and Nicole Kemmit. Kayla Lynch, the freshman net minder, set aside 10 saves throughout the game, her second highest record of the season.
4/18 Varsity vs Plymouth N: Lead by Julia Coakley's stellar goalkeeping (15 huge saves) and Jess Ferrigno's offensive assault (5 goals) the Lady Trojans beat Plymouth North 11-7. When Plymouth North attempted to shut down Jess true to form other team members stepped up and put the ball in the net. Sam MacMillan scored twice, Kendall Smith, Olivia Coakley, Kelly Gormley, and Nicole Alphonso scored one goal apiece. Abby Hatfield, Jill McElroy, Liv Coakley, Shae O'Connell, and Jill Yung all played outstanding defensive and consistantly set the attack into motion. Sam MacMillan, Krysta Williams, Ali Ladue, Laura Brandos, Maddy Reilly, Abby Raymond, and Kendall McDonough played aggressively and never let down.JV: On Monday April 18, the first day of April vacation, the JV Lady Trojans were dwindling in numbers. A few of the varsity players, who had worked hard in their own game, offered themselves to play for the JV so they could field a game as well. The JV team is continuing to work hard on defense, with communication, as well as on offense. Goals were scored by four different players; Kelly Aliberti, Shae O'Connell, Abby Raymond, and Brandi Pace. Netting one goal a piece was; Aliberti, O'Connel, and Raymond, and Pace netted two of her own. Playing center was Steph Hardy, and she won a total of 7 draw controls, and picked up 6 ground balls. The defense for this team is still growing stronger, and they are learning to work well and communicate together. A great effort was put in by defenders; Steph Chicoine, Lauren Boyle, Shae O'Connel, Lauren Burgess, Abby Hatfield and netminder Kayla Lynch. Kayla set asside 9 saves throughout the game. The final of this game was 8-5 in favor of Plymouth North. Overall a great effort was put in by the players who were there to play during their vacaiton.
4/15 Varsity vs New Bedford: The Bridgewater-Raynham Girls Lacrosse team has class. Lots of it. They respect the game of lacrosse, they respect their opponents, they respect each other, they respect their coaches, and most importantly they respect themselves. They know that when they walk off the field they are walking off with their heads held high no matter what it says on the scoreboard. Amidst an extremely physical and mentally challenging game, the Lady Trojans managed to shave the Lady Whalers winning record to 4-1 during their trip to the Whaling City on Friday. Playing slightly short handed the players all focused in on what they needed to do, dug deep to draw from their strong sense of sportsmanship and played their game. The win was truly a team effort as some players had to sacrifice their Varsity playing time in order to field a JV team and some players were asked to play in positions that were new to them. It would have been easy to lose our cool and lose focus but everyone gave all that they had off the draw, on attack, on defensive, and didn’t quit until the last whistle of the game. Nicole Alphonso, Maddy Reillly, and Sam MacMillan scored two goals a piece. Kelly Gormley, Jess Ferrigno (1 assist), and Shannen Heath (1 assist) scored one goal each. Defensive standouts were Shae O’Connell, Kylee McGloughlin, Jill Yung, Liv Coakley, Abby Hatfield, and Ali Ladue. Julia Coakley was focused in net and did not let the Whalers get in her head. She came up with 20 big saves in net. The BR girls lacrosse coaches are extremely proud of each and every player on that field. The Lady Trojans are now 3-1 and face Plymouth North at home on Monday at 10am. JV: The girls jv lacrosse won their first game of the season 8-7. Goals were scored for BR by Kelly Aliberti, Brandy Pace, Steph Hardy, Abbey Hatfield, and Kendall Smith. Kayla Lynch was in net and has 12 great saves, throwing herself in front of the ball to stop it. BR's Marissa Ramano, Lauren Boyle, Steph Chicoine, and Kendall Smith played a great game on defense. They were verbal and worked well together, always hustling to the ball when need be. Great first win B-R!
4/11 Varsity vs Ursline Academy: The Lady Trojans didn't bring their game faces and suffered their first set back of the season with a 13-4 loss to Ursuline Academy. A second half rally was lead by Sam MacMillan (2 goals, Jess Ferrigno (1 goal), and Olivia Coakley (1 goal and 2 assists.) Strong defense play by Shea O'Connell and Jill Yung (1 assist.) Julia Coakley had ten saves in net.
4/9 Varsity vs Nantucket: The Varsity Girls Lacrosse team put on a passing clinic in their 12-6 win against Nantucket today and remain undefeated. The Lady Trojan's transition game is improving with each game. The team effort was lead by defensive standouts Jill Yung, Olivia Coakly, Shannen Heath, Abby Hatfield, and Kylee McGloughlin. Goals were scored by Sammy MacMillan (3 goals), Jess Ferrigno (3 goals), Kendall McDonough (2 goals), Nicole Alphonso (1 goal), Shannen Heath (1 goal), Olivia Coakley (1 goal), and Kelly Gormley (1 goal). Julia Coakley made 30 saves in net and an awesome run up the field with the ball. JV: The JV Girls lacrosse team played very well today in their 4-4 tie game against Nantucket. The players proved themselves to be very versatile as there were only a couple of substitutes. Everyone played well and gave it their all. Goal scorers were CoCo Kemmitt (2 goals ), Stephanie hardy (1 goal), and Kasey Fries (1 goal). Marissa Dolloff played well in net and made 12 saves. Standout defenders were Shea O'Connell, Lauren Boyle, Abby Murphy, Alyssa Young, and Stephanie Chicoine.
4/6 Varsity vs Dartmouth: The Bridgewater-Raynham Girls Varsity lacrosse team beat the Dartmouth Indians today in a closely matched game with a score of 13-12. The victory marked the first time the Trojans had won their opening day game as well as the first time BR beat Dartmouth over the course of 3 years and 7 games. The win was especially outstanding as it was truly a team effort. Everyone gave their all from the first whistle of the game to the last whistle of the game. Goal scorers were Jess Ferrigno (4 goals), Sam MacMillan (3 goals), Jill Yung (3 goals ), Olivia Coakley (1 goal), Jill McElroy (1 goal), and Maddy Reilly (1 goal.) Assists were from Krysta Williams, Jill Yung, Nicole Alphonso, Kelly Gormley, Jess Ferrigno, Olivia Coakley, and Shannon Heath. Julia Coakley played very well in net making 30 saves. The Trojans record is now 1-0-0. Todays hard fought win exemplified the saying Play Together - Win Together. |
