Game Notes 2012 Season
10/15: Varsity vs Brockton: JV: Down several key players at key positions, BR did not have an answer for Brockton to the tune of 7-0. The closest BR got was with the tremendous efforts of Jake Kirk at the forward position. He made several key plays that kept pressure on Brockton early, but his efforts alone were not enough. With several players playing in unfamiliar positions, Brockton was able to slice through the defense and get many one on one opportunities with the goalies. Lukas Hanson, Logan Ribeiro, Dan Rivera, Tyrone Harris, and Nick Loguidice all played hard but to no avail. Freshman: Today's effort left a little bit to be desired. Hopefully these future varsity athletes just don't think they can throw their game jerseys on the ground and people will crumble. This experience hopefully remind the boys they need to come physically and mentally prepared.
10/9 Varsity vs Dartmouth: JV: In a tightly contested game, the Trojans came back from down one goal to earn a much deserved 1-1 tie in Dartmouth. With BR down in the first half, Christian Torres netted a goal, to tie the game, on a nice feed from Enrique Jimenez. Robert Matthews-Forte made several great saves in the second half to keep the game tied. Strong games were played by James Alzabac, Jacob Loguidice, Josh Monson, and Andrew Cohoon. Freshman: We played a tough game versus another quality opponent Dartmouth. The fellas are continuing to get better each day.
10/4 Varsity vs New Bedford: JV: BR lost this game 5-0. The first half saw the Trojans miss on 4 great opportunities in on goal, while New Bedford capitalized on 2 mistakes by BR to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. The second half was similar to the first half, where BR saw some chances go by the board. New Bedford continued to capitalize on poor execution by the BR defense. Lukas Hanson played a strong defensive minded game, as well as Jake Kirk. James Alzabac was strong on his defensive wing during the second half. Freshman: Played a giant today. NB is a fantastic team and we are competing with some of the best teams in the state. The baby frosh and future of B-R soccer is understanding containment and reversing the field. Most important they are playing hard, tough and starting to get mentally strong.
10/2 Varsity vs Barnstable: JV: In the second matchup against Barnstable, the Trojans came ready to play. Ben Pace had a great opportunity from Sean Pope, but put the ball over the net. Robert Matthews-Forte came up big in the first half stopping a flurry of shots that came in. Josh Monson scored the lone goal of the game in the second half, and BR was able to close out the game with a 1-0 win. Freshman: We are getting better and starting to understand the fundamentals of soccer. Alex Molle played an outstanding game today and the team is proud of his improvement.
9/29 Varsity vs Plymouth South: On a cold windy day at BR, the Trojans put together a great team effort to defeat visiting Plymouth South 3-0. Mark Hamalian started off the scoring with another beautiful direct free kick into the side netting. Fifteen minutes later, Hamalian sent in a long cross that Evan Henriques headed into the back of the net for a 2-0 Trojan lead. Steve Pace finished up the scoring with a penalty kick late in the second half. Tom Dacey had a strong game in goal, earning his first varsity shutout. Edson Perez, John DaSilva, John Leone, Thomas Prgomet, John Dray, Faries Gray, Tim Sullivan, Chris Moitoza and Nick Holmes had strong games for the Trojans JV: In a return matchup of a 0-0 tie from the first game, the Trojans carried the play for 90% of the game applying pressure throughout. Many of the Trojan shots were either stopped by the stellar play of the Plymouth goalie or they hit the post. Midway through the first half, Andrew Cohoon wowed the crowd with a rifle of a shot that rang off of the post. In the second half, Plymouth South had a few chances and Robert Matthews-Forte came up with three great saves in a row to keep the game tied 0-0. Late in the game, BR had a chance to put one in but was called back for offsides. The game ended in a difficult 0-0 tie.
9/27 Varsity vs Dartmouth: The BR Boys Varsity soccer team faced it's toughest opponent of the season. Dartmouth High School came in with a record of 6-0-1. BR jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Mark Hamalian scored on a beautiful direct free kick from 25 yards out. Dartmouth evened up the game with under 10 seconds left in the half on a long direct free kick of their own. Dartmouth took the lead for good 15 minutes into the second half on a header from the right side of the goal. The Trojans didn't give up, fighting for two good scoring chances that the Dartmouth goalkeeper turned away. Matt Cicalis, Tom Yung, Mark Hamalian, and the defensive back four (Glavin, Dinunno, Myers, and Hollstein) had good games for BR. JV : In a back and forth game, BR made five defensive errors that cost them the game. On three of those five mistakes, Dartmouth scored; while Enrique Jimenez scored a goal for BR. Robert Matthews Forte played very well in goal for the Trojans. Freshman: Had a two goal lead and the flood gate opened quickely and shut. Played a very good game but a mental lapse allowed to many chances. Dartmouth being the good team that they are punched the ticket.
9/25 Varsity vs Durfee: The BR boys varsity soccer team played one of it's strongest games of the season. After going down 1 - 0 ten minutes into the game, Matt Cicalis took a long pass from Mark Hamalian, beating not only the Durfee sweeper in a footrace, but dribbling right around the Durfee goalkeeper to tie the game. For the next 66 minutes, the Trojan defense of Kyle Dinunno, Greg Hollstein, Tyler Glavin, Nick Myers and Tom Dacey held Durfee at bay. The entire Trojan boys team played well earning the tie. JV: With the Trojans up 1-0, the defense had a mental lapse in play and allowed Durfee to score 3 goals. Another game where the Trojans could not close out a game while playing with the lead.
9/20 Varsity vs Barnstable: BR continued it's strong road play with a tie at Barnstable High School. The Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game on a Tom Yung goal assisted by Matt Cicalis. Barnstable settled in and scored three goals in a 12 minute span. BR tied the game 30 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick from Brandon Troup. Several minutes later, Ben Pace scored a goal to take a 3-2 lead. The Trojans continued their tough play only to be stopped by the Barnstable goal keeper. Barnstable tied the game 3-3 with a penalty kick of their own with 2 minutes left in the game. The game was called at the same instant it was realized that Barnstable had 12 men on the field. Freshman: The future athletes of the varsity are starting to put some skills together and show some scoring ability. It takes time but both offensively and defensively are playing well but we are having mental breakdowns.
9/18 Varsity vs Quincy: The BR varsity boys team put together a great team effort at Quincy High School, dominating the game for all but 7 minutes. Evan Henriques scored 3 minutes into the second half. Goalkeeper Tom Dacey turned away many scoring chances during the second half until Quincy was awarded a penalty kick. Matt Cicalis hit the crossbar with a head ball late in the game, and the Quincy goalkeeper made a diving save on another Matt Cicalis attempt. The Quincy goalie had an amazing performance and made several great saves throughout the game to keep the game tied 0-0. In the final minute, Andrew Cohoon scored from the top of the 18 to give BR a hard fought 1-0 win. Every player played a solid, mistake free game. The defense allowed few shots to get through, but Rob Matthews-Forte and Shuhb Chokski combined to make several key saves for the shutout. The midfield was able to win most of the 50-50 balls during the game which allowed the team to apply consistent pressure. James Alzabac played well defensively as he played an unfamiliar position.Freshman vs Silver Lake: Scored 3 goals in 4 min and 18 sec. I put in some substitutions and the score was 3-3 by the 10 min mark. We are striving to become a well rounded team and all can contribute.

The midfield played strong and shut down many of New Bedfords chances before they got started. Josh Monson, Dan Rivera, Ben Pace, Sean Pope, Logan Ribeiro and Jacob LoGuidice all played very strong games at the forward and midfield positions. Freshman: New Bedford beat us in all phases of this contest. The big lesson the boys learned is not to chase but contain. Also this gave us a guide where we need to progress. We need to get stronger, better skilled, and be mentally tougher to put us in a positive position to succeed.
